Pulling translations from transifex.net currently requires a user account
on the server. It would be great if anonymous users could pull updates
too.

Perhaps I'm missing something.
I've just set up my project (openconnect) to use Transifex. I'd like to
add an 'update-translations' target to its makefile, so it can be done
automatically as part of the process of tagging and releasing a new
version.
I can add a .tx/config file to the git repository, along with the make
rules to call 'tx pull'. But it would be so much nicer if it worked in
anonymous mode and 'just worked' in any git checkout of the source code,
without having to have an account.

Hi,
we plan on allowing anonymous users to download translations from
Transifex. However, there are some changes in the process that need to
take place first, which will make downloading files much faster (and
lighter for our servers!).
I can't tell for sure when the relevant changes will be finished and
deployed, since they will be quite radical and as a result they need
testing on our side, but I'd *guess* in 1-2 months tops.

Can you help us understand why is this a blocker for you in order to find
the best solution?
Allowing anonymous access comes with a number of considerations, including
throttling, DDoS attacks and others, so we'd like to make sure we get this
right before allowing it.

The .po files must be downloaded as part of the build-from-clone
process, and I do not want to require that developers create an
account with transifex solely to build the package from a fresh
git clone. There is no rush for this project, iwhd. I've already
begun the process of switching to translationproject.org.
It offers anonymous .po-file download via rsync.

Transifex 1.2 was a it late and, as a result, things have been delayed.
But this is definitely on the roadmap for after version 1.2 is released.

Would be great avoid the auth. Pulling is quite slow and would probably be
faster without this step.

Hi,
The process of exporting translations has already received some work to
make it faster. There are a couple of things left to be done, before this
goes live.
However, since we are shutting the trac down, I am moving the issue to
github (https://github.com/transifex/transifex/issues/1). If you are
interested to follow this, refer to that issue.
