Kevin,
I noticed on your site that the section 27 map shows that it’s been updated for 2016. It’s still showing the red route from New Mexico up into Colorado to Branson as an option. If this is the same route that was included in the tracks last year, it is a hard dead end at a very determined rancher’s property. There is a fortress quality locked metal gate and substantial fence blocking this route and while there, we met the owner who informed us that while the road might “technically” be a public road, that it hasn’t been maintained by public funds in over 30 years; he considers it part of his ranch; and he also informed us that he’s made it impassable to get out the other side to continue even if he let us through. In any event, there is a local determined owner who is not welcoming of TAT traffic.
Again, if this red route is the same, it’s a mistake to include it on your tracks and map. It’s a pity because the ride out to the ranch was an easy but very fun and scenic ride. After Oklahoma, we were looking for a challenge so we took the red route. However, following it and having to turn around and back-track to the normal route will put a lot of riders in a fuel situation. We had to jump off the route to go find fuel before continuing to Trinidad.
