The UK is an outlier, with a long tradition of building really really horrible infrastructure for cycling even when there is room for much better (note the raised median in the first photo). Part of the problem, in my biased opinion is the over-emphasis on the 'primary position' (riding fast and taking the lane) in UK cycling education. This is not new, it dates back to the 1920s with the controversy over the introduction of the first cycle paths if I remember correctly.

I can see a danger of this being imported to Canada under the guise of 'complete streets' and the like. If you want the best, learn from the best (and learn to identify and avoid the worst).
