I have been thinking a lot in the past years about the invasive
pollution of advertisement and in particular new types of
advertisement who are often unregulated, such as for example web pop-
ups that contain colorful flashes at rates that seem to be well lower
subliminal thresholds (I know that there are some limits as regards
flicker rate on the french tv for example). I wanted to share an
anecdote with the group that illustrates my point.

I just did a 7h bus ride from Toronto to Montreal. The bus had
darkerning windows, it was late in the evening and then night and the
20 tv screens in the bus were playing in a loop a 15 min montage of
bad commercials and suposedly entertaining content (such as hidden
camera or "funny" pictures from the web).
Here I was, sitting right in front (a few cms) of one of those TV,
half asleep, in the dark and even eyes closed I could feel the
hammering hi-rate flickering lights. During the short moments where I
would open my eyes or get in and out of sleep I would see bartenders
and lobsters, wrecked cars or Niagara Falls helicopter tours....

I really felt I was being brain raped and there was no way to turn
individual TV's off. I paid the full fare price and I guess that
customers have a basic right to control what's being fed through their
pupils.

I know this is nothing new I am telling here, but I would like to know
if somebody in the group is working on the effects of this kind of
sensory pollution and has references for me.

Best

repeated images or flashing of the screen will certainly start a
trance, but the effect
of the trance will have mostly to do with the content of the loop - or
the talking,
since you had your eyes closed. that said, some of the talking
probably had
inadvertent or deliberate embedded commands or command fragments which
could 'haunt' you for some time. for example, if the niagra scene had
in
there 'look at her go over that waterfall' 'she's going down again'
and so on,
this could have a rather negative effect next time you are standing on
top
of a building looking down, and so on. these kinds of hypnotic
commands
are really irksome and usually serve only to increase the sort of
stress in
life we all experience. trance abuse indeed.
