Ihave been a passionate enthusiast of the arts for as long as I can remember. I was born with a gift for art. Growing up, I loved to use my crayons to create beautiful drawings and paintings. My parents were supportive, I am grateful for the opportunities they gave me. I have never had formal training in anatomy for artists and have always wanted to learn how to do things right. I don't know how to rate my skills because my work is always well-received. I feel like I need to improve my skills before I can truly excel as an artist.
One day, I met a professional fine artist, who told me that to draw better portraits, I have to learn anatomy. Given my background, I feel that I would have benefitted from such an experience. I started learning on my own, and I lacked a clear structure. There are many great resources available online for free, but I wanted a course that is designed specifically for artists who need to learn anatomy fast. I've made the decision to dedicate all my energy to my art career, and I'm really excited about it. I was set to begin my adult life with a major in fine art, and I knew that this would be the perfect choice for me. However, that was not to be. I studied graphic design, but had to go to work at 18. Years later, I built my own studio, stocked up on art supplies and searched tirelessly for inspiration only to find intimidation at the blank page and fear of failure at fruitless attempts. From time to time I was able to succeed, but only due to my diligent ability to "bring things into line".
This was before I have found the Anatomy Master Class; things have changed since. Taking this online art course, was the turning point for me. In this class, I found exactly what I was looking for - a simple to follow, yet comprehensive anatomy course that is designed for artists, not medical students. In this course, I learn only what is important for figurative art, without wasting any time on anything less essential. Also, the great thing for me is that I do not have to learn any Latin names of bones and muscles here. In the video lessons, the course teachers use simple terms and common names that I already know. This makes things much easier. I am working hard to improve my portrait and figure drawing skills and I hope to eventually be able to teach others about the joys of drawing. If I had known about Anatomy Master Class earlier, I would have enrolled right away.
Thank you very much for creating this course for artists like me. I also grateful for your support and advice you give me every time I have a question or need a second opinion on my artwork. Your feedback and constructive critique are so helpful.

Taking inspiration from Drawn to Glamour: Fashion Illustrations by Jim Howard and Degas: A Passion for Perfection, this live drawing master class inspired participants to capture movement while accomplished dancer and artist Marian Faustino performed. We explored various gesture-drawing techniques with a variety of drawing tools. Participants discovered abstract mark-making while capturing Marian Faustino's incredible movements with continuous line, blind contour, and sustained gesture. Participants also had the opportunity to inform/assist in the choreography of Marian Faustino's final dance performance.

sketching i used to think was a means to an end but recently another artist stated that it is an art in itself. i have been doing drawings in between painting to develop my eye and because i thought if i can't sketch well, i can't be a 'proper artist'. what are your thoughts if any on this?
Awesome. I remember one of our teachers expected us to be able to just draw in all the bones instantly and without any effort...ha!
Where (what book?) did you find the master drawings to copy from?
Jala the book is "Language of the Body", a nice collection of drawings by Prud'hon. The book is expensive, though, you can probably find some of the drawings online just by searching Google images....
Rahina I always advocate drawing as much as possible as often as possible - but as for being a "proper artist", trying to meet any definition of a proper artist will probably make us feel inadequate, and most artists are experts at finding ways to feel inadequate!!
All but one were painted on location, but I love the web and intricacy of the line drawings almost more than the finished piece. Once the line drawing is done, I usually throw it down on the ground and snap a photo. This sketch below of San Giuseppe in Rome did not get color, as I ran out of time before the building closed. The caretaker was kind enough to give me a few extra minutes to finish the linework.
Below is my second church interior ever, also done back in 2013 in Civita di Bagnoregio, Italy, where I now teach a workshop most years. This was the first time I exaggerated the angle of the columns to either side to give the feeling of a 3-point perspective looking up.
Handmade by a 3rd generation family-owned business near Barcelona, you can feel the love that goes into making every brush. Beautifully weighted, impeccably crafted using machines their grandfather invented. I often say that my favorite Escoda travel brush should be on display in the Museum of Modern Art!
I should add that I am now an ambassador for Escoda Brushes! Proud and a bit shocked to be included given their roster! They sent me a list of what I would need to do in this role, and I replied that I already do all those things ?
This past weekend was the opening day of boating season in Seattle and the Windermere Cup races at the University of Washington. Lots of people and boats, gray drizzle, but for me, the highlight was getting to sketch the interior of the actual UW Shell House made famous in both the popular book and the recent film, The Boys in the Boat.
+ Total WORKSHOP FEE is US$300.00 Included are 3 jam-packed classes on perspective and watercolor urban sketching with live crits of your work during the classes. Classes will be limited in size to a small group maximum of around 20 so that I can provide individual feedback on your work.
Breakfast in Paris? Oui! There are only a few spots open in my upcoming perspective and watercolor workshop in the dreamy City of Light, and the discount price ends in only 2 days on April 20! If you are interested, information is here.
Anyone who has ever done one of my workshops knows that I love teaching how to analyze the proportions and perspective in any view I sketch (does anyone else do this?), so I had to include the analysis for this one. ?
