The attached clipping is from the Melbourne Sun of 9 Feb 1927, when the
Richmond cable tram line was about to be replaced with electric trams.

The photographer was probably on the roof of the cable tram car shed.

The location is the cable tram terminus where the tramway reached the
river and connected with a shuttle service along Burwood Rd and Power St
to Hawthorn, initially with horse trams and later with electric trams of
the Hawthorn Tramways Trust.

In 1924, the two Melbourne Birneys were first put into service on that
route and one of them is visible.

The Birney would have still had a bow collector, but the image is not
good enough to show that.

See: https://tdu.to/i/32089 for a pic showing a bow collector.

Unfortunately we are not allowed on the roof of what is left of the tram shed but here are a couple of 2023 views of the Bridge Hotel courtesy of that well known map creator.

Nice. That’s the former cable tram shed on the left with the arched doorway?

David - catching up on old emails…

No, the cable tram shed is under the photographer - who was on its roof.

Here's the view of it in 1965 from the other side of the road, still
looking east.

The pic was made by me on a TMSV tour marking 80 years from the opening
of the Melbourne cable trams.

The facade remains in front of a new development.

Mal Rowe noting that it now over 80 years since the cable trams closed!

Interesting. Thanks, Mal. A lovely big building. A pity it’s been gutted but I guess it would be hard to find a sympathetic re-use for it. At least the facade remains.
