Vicsig (https://www.facebook.com/groups/vicsig ) is suggesting that the Metro Tunnel will open by the 3rd quarter of 2024.
The Victoria Street upgrade will be constructed around mid-2024. I am sure the two projects are related.

It is my understanding that a major driver for the project was to close the tramway on the west side of the old signal box to allow creation of a tiny park.

However, the Elizabeth St - Swanston St connection is pretty
important to allow transfer of trams between Essendon and (the
new) Maidstone depots and the rest of the system.
Through routing 57 with one of the southern routes would reduce
congestion at the Elizabeth St terminus - where savvy southbound
passengers usually alight at Collins S and walk to Finders St
rather than sitting in their tram waiting to get into the shunt.
(Pic attached)
It would also give Swanston St some low floor trams.

Will the former signal box be kept?
It perhaps should be heritage listed, OR failing that, re-erected somewhere – Hawthorn if there is room, or Bylands for example.

The Victorian Heritage Database has details of the signal box along with three photos. Refer to

The signal box has been 'cleaned up' since the pics on the Heritage site.
2016 pic attached.
All it currently is used for is a toilet block.
It would seem to offer a good basis for a coffee shop.
