Yarra Trams has announced plans to upgrade the existing tram tracks in Victoria Street and install new left-turning tram tracks at the signalised intersection of Victoria and Swanston streets.

At Elizabeth and Victoria Streets, there will be a new east-west connection across Elizabeth Street.

This is a major improvement on the existing layout, and opens up the possibility of various interesting runs.

Could it have something to do with the Underground project? I presume there's going to be a lot of route changes associated with that.

Perhaps changing route 57 to run into Swanston St (and through to a southern terminus) will eliminate delays to 19 and 59 trams caused by waiting for a 57 to clear the Victoria St intersection out of Elizabeth St? It would also save squeezing three routes into the two-track terminus at Flinders St.  And the planned separate turning lane outside the City Baths would mean trams routed through North Melbourne would not obstruct those going north in Swanston St.

Vicsig (https://www.facebook.com/groups/vicsig ) is suggesting that the Metro Tunnel will open by the 3rd quarter of 2024.

The Victoria Street upgrade will be constructed around mid-2024. I am sure the two projects are related.

It is my understanding that a major driver for the project was to close the tramway on the west side of the old signal box to allow creation of a tiny park.

See the pic that Brian posted at: https://tdu.to/i/83989

However, the Elizabeth St - Swanston St connection is pretty important to allow transfer of trams between Essendon and (the new) Maidstone depots and the rest of the system.

Through routing 57 with one of the southern routes would reduce congestion at the Elizabeth St terminus - where savvy southbound passengers usually alight at Collins S and walk to Finders St rather than sitting in their tram waiting to get into the shunt. (Pic attached)

It would also give Swanston St some low floor trams.

Will the former signal box be kept?

It perhaps should be heritage listed, OR failing that, re-erected somewhere – Hawthorn if there is room, or Bylands for example.

Yes, the Franklin St box is heritage listed.  If you look at the smaller pic that Brian posted you will see that one option could be for it to become a coffee shop.
Mal Rowe who reckons Melbourne can never have too many coffee shops.

The Victorian Heritage Database has details of the signal box along with three photos. Refer to

The signal box has been 'cleaned up' since the pics on the Heritage site.

2016 pic attached.

All it currently is used for is a toilet block.

It would seem to offer a good basis for a coffee shop.

"Service changes apply to Route 19, 57 and 59 tram". Scheduled dates are 4th July to 20th July. Presumably for the connecting tracks across Elizabeth Street.
