A couple more pics of the new Maidstone depot in Melbourne's west.

First pic look north from the depot entrance along Hampstead Rd.

There is plenty of space in the tramway reserve.  I don't know why the
track centres widen near the depot entrance - perhaps there will be some
sort of shelter there but I don't know for what purpose.

Second pic looks into the depot from the same spot.

The structure over the inbound track will house wheel monitoring
equipment - checking each tram as it runs in.

The grey sawtooth roof building in the background is the maintenance
facility which will include a wheel lathe on the south most road..

The building to the right of the overhead pole and behind the trees is
the admin block.

Further to the right and behind the trees tracks run around to the car
storage area plus sanding and car wash facilities.

Mal Rowe - seeing a lot more than a tram shed.

Interwesting pics, Mal. Must be exciting to be close to the opening off the new depot. Is the intention to replace Preston Workshops by having equipment at each Depot, do you think, or is it to save unnecessary dead running to and from the Works?

Yes.  There will be a loading dock on the south side of the entry tracks.

I have attached a plan showing the layout as noted in mid-1923 -
probably close to final version.

This has been in the works for longer than I realised!

Why are there tracks heading south from the entrance?

Probably a drafting error that was not picked up.

That would make sense, although I have no official documentation.

The new facility is very well equipped and could do anything that
Preston does.

Having said that, I don't think that there is a plan to make every depot
a workshop.  It's just a development of the current model where (for
example) the Siemens C and D class are primarily serviced in the No 1
shed at Malvern.

I have attached a detailed plan of the facilities in the new maintenance
shed - from the public consultation document of 2023.

It's probably equipped so that the 'vendor' who has the maintenance
contract (Alstom ?) has their own space in which they can carry out most
repairs and maintenance - as opposed to doing a deal with whom ever runs
Preston Workshops this year for working and storage space.

Thanks Mal,will the wheel lathe be used  to do other trams as well to take pressure off Southbank  & Preston and will they be doing services on the existing fleet similar to what Southbank does now?
