The couplers are a constant source of angst.

It appears Alstom/Transdev have rejected the idea of putting some sort
of barrier on the side of the cars (Like some places in the US do, and
Poland!) and instead are altering the software on the 'DDU' to show the
rear cab camera of the leading car in the middle of the drivers screen.
This change is currently being trialled with a few sets having the
software change to enable it.

The idea being that it will be on the driver to not only check the doors
are clear and there is no one in front of them as they depart, they need
to look at the DDU screen to see if any one is between the cars too.

The barriers SF have put on the new Siemens cars look ugly, but will be
more effective at deterring people from doing stupid things than the
Sydney approach of putting it on the driver to look for these idiots on
a screen as they depart.

Coupler problem could be solved by running double the frequency with a single set rather than the coupled stuff now, of course they won't like that; twice as many drivers..
Or else invent a much shorter coupling arrangement.

One of the reasons Sydney is running double sets is a limitation transport put on the number 'road crossing per hour' on the route - and the only way to get the desired capacity with the limit on crossings was to run longer trams.

Even if the government / transdev wanted to employ more drivers, they would have an almighty fight with the traffic planners over all the CBD road crossings. Even now the trams don't have full priority and a significant amount of time is spent on each journey waiting for traffic lights to change.
The traffic planners in Sydney have way too much power - multiple bus priority schemes have been tired and killed off over the years. They will do anything to keep the 'vehicles per hour' figure for each intersection as high as possible (Vehicles per hour not people per hour, so a bus or tram has the same weight to the planners as a single occupant car.)

I can only assume any one who joins the planning dept who has more progressive ideas on traffic management doesn't last long.
