A laptop is a type of computer that is portable enough to be used while traveling. Compared to these larger machines, laptops generally use less power but provide less overall performance because they cannot deal with heat as well. Most of your programs will be stored on a HDD(Hard Disk Drive) or SSD(Solid State Drive) both of these storage devices are considered non-volatile meaning the data is stored whether the devices have power supplied to them or not. What makes the two different is a HDD is a mechanical drive and consists of moving parts, it has spinning metal platters and an arm/need that reads the data off of these platters. They move at very high speeds, generally a lot thicker than SSDs and more prone to permanent physical damage (i.e. Drops, bumps, magnets, etc) although they are still relevant for storing lots of data. SSDs on the other hand is what is usually used in modern home Desktops and Laptops they have a couple of advantages such as being a lot smaller than standard HDD and have a lot faster speeds in terms of read/write scenarios. SSDs also do not have any moving parts as it's all flash memory so there is no need for any spinning platters or a arm/needle to read the data off them it happens almost instantly which gives you a lot faster boot up times and load times on games or demanding programs. There are also NVME SSDs which are still an SSD but even faster and smaller! And you will see a lot of laptops that will say M.2 NVME SSD which stands for non-volatile memory express these are very fast storage devices that take advantage of a computers PCIe lane for increased bandwidth.
