to Training, Instructional Design, and Human Performance Engineering
The use of the concepts of Human Performance Engineering to solve
performance problems or to improve individual (and team) quality,
reduce the need for support (reduce overhead), and improve teamwork.
HPE requires the use of practical performance terms and concepts that
are directly and clearly related to the task and performance
objectives. A typical learning objective today may look thus; "The
trainee will understand...".
Using HPE methods, a learning objective would resemble: "upon the
completion of one hour of self-paced on-line introduction
(prerequisite), three hours of instruction, demonstration, practice
with peer and instructor feedback, the trainee, unassisted, within one
hour, will ready the feed water system for start up without error.
As you can see there is a dramatic difference between the two learning
objectives. This demonstrates the power between the standard training
and performance support and the initiatives developed using the
practical concepts of Human Performance Engineering.
