Hello All:

I am starting to plan out some longish mountain runs to help Katy and I train for the Trans Rockies.  We will be hitting the Pemi, 100 Mile Wilderness, Long Trail, and some other trails in the Whites including the Presi.  What is the best direction for the Presi? And can one get a ride back to the start or do you need to queue a second car?

Thanks.

Presi is usually done point to point, unless you want to run an out and back. Most people who do it shuttle cars. I'd check with Kevin Tilton or Adam Wilcox, they might have a creative alternative way to make a loop and they know the area quite well.

I will be doing some runs up Mt. Wash with others leading up to the race in June, weekends.  I'll keep you in the loop if you are interested in that.

There is a wonderful forum with tons of info on all things in the
Whites called Views From The Top. Lots of really knowledgeable folks
there with endless advice.

Presi traverse certainly works in either direction; I'd prob start
from the north because the northern stuff seems to me to be a bit more
intense -- but people do it both ways.... There are some shuttles
available now if I recall correctly but there aren't many of them (or
weren't, last I checked) so the timing is tricky esp if you are doing
early/late starts and finishes.

I always love an excuse to carpool/split gas and go down there, as I
really can't justify the expense of going alone! Please feel free to
connect if you possibly want to attempt to coordinate -- I'd prob just
do other stuff solo while you-all do the hardcore stuff. If schedules
are compatible I would be into helping with shuttling or support or
whatever. Can fit three friendly passengers and gear in my car!

Peace!

North to South is also smarter since you are running downhill the
whole way!

Hi Chuck. I like to go southbound to get the biggest climbs and toughest footing done in the first half. From Washington the footing and grade is much more runnable. I've always done it with a car spot, but I seem to remember that the AMC has a shuttle bus going around the Whites, though I've heard the hours are somewhat inconvenient for a Presi Traverse.

I would be interested in fitting in a Presi traverse between now and mid May.  Does anyone know if the snow is out enough to go ahead?

From what I hear, most people are still using microspikes in some areas on the Presis because patches of ice/monorail are still there.  But maybe you'd be fine with screw shoes (though having screws in the whole time would probably be a pain)...

Hey Chuck,

I've only done it fast-packing from North to South starting at Pinkham Notch and ending at Crawford.  We had dropped a car.
