Dear all,
Sompeta firing-14July2010 (Srikakulam dist of AP). AP High Court has stayed the Government Order allocating 972 acres of swampy lands to a thermal plant in Sompeta (Srikakulam dist in AP) by Nagarujuna Construction Company (NCC). Farmers and fisher folk have been fighting a heroic struggle against the thermal plant and takeover of their lands. They also had to fight a corrupt administration and a sold out political class. Three people were killed (two on the spot and one later), five sustained bullet injuries and scores of men and women were severely injured in a brutal use of force by the police and private goons brought by the NCC on peaceful protesters on 14 July 2010. I was a member of a fact-finding team that went into the circumstances leading to the police firing.
