Dear All,
You can find the video recording of Prof. Jorge Laval's presentation discussing Self-organized Criticality of Traffic Flow at the University of Michigan's NGTS seminar series in the link below:
Full Title: Self-organized criticality of traffic flow: Implications for congestion management
Speaker: Prof.
Jorge Laval, PhD,
Georgia Institute of Technology
Abstract:
This talk shows that the kinematic wave model exhibits self-organized criticality, a celebrated paradigm in the 90's that has proved very useful in countless areas of science, from earthquakes to stock prices to forest fires to astrophysics. A direct consequence is that conventional traffic management strategies seeking to maximize the flow may be detrimental as they make the system more unpredictable and more prone to collapse. This and other important implications for congestion management will be discussed.
Best,
Rafegh
