In early 1953, North Korean forces launched a large-scale attack against Hill 812, which was then under the control of K Company, 3rd Battalion, 179th Infantry.[114] The ensuing Battle of Hill Eerie was one of a series of larger attacks by Chinese and North Korean forces which produced heavier fighting than the previous year had seen. These offensives were conducted largely in order to secure a better position during the ongoing truce negotiations.[114] Chinese forces continued to mount concentrated attacks on the lines of the UN forces, including the 45th Infantry Division, but the division managed to hold most of its ground, remaining stationary until the end of the war in the summer of 1953.[115]

He commissioned in the summer of 1953 as a second lieutenant following graduation from the Reserve Officer Training Corps at the University of Michigan. The research hypothesis adopted here proposes that the observed increase in winter temperature is expressed by a decline of the frequency of ECWs and an increase in the frequency of EMWs. This paper continues from previous studies by the authors (Twardosz and Kossowska-Cezak 2013a, b, 2015a, b) on exceptionally hot and cold summer seasons in Europe. The intention is to provide comprehensive understanding of thermal anomalies in winter using a single method of their identification, long-term observation data and covering the whole of Europe, as opposed to a wide body of fragmented research targeting different areas and periods (e.g. Baur 1954; Graham et al. 2006; Hirschi and Sinha 2007; Hirschi 2008; Cattiaux et al. 2010; Wang et al. 2010; Ouzeau et al. 2011; Buchan et al. 2014).

The climate of northern Italy differs greatly from that of the south. The winters tend to be cold. There is heavy snowfall in the Alps, much rain elsewhere, and fog. The summers are not as hot, and summer rains aid farming.

The Italian government also carried out other measures to help farmers. New roads were built to help carry produce to market. New irrigation systems, needed during the long, dry summers, were constructed. Warehouses and cold storage facilities for farm products were provided, and the government introduced new crops. As a result of these changes, farming in central and especially southern Italy became more prosperous.
