InDesign provides support for the EPUB 2 section in the OPF file. InDesign automatically detects the cover and the print Table Of Contents option. To determine the text type, InDesign uses the epub:type values specified in the Object Export Options dialog.

Hi Sebastian, I found your question today, and I discovered that the open source ePub reader Calibre has a built in PDF to epub converter that is super fast. You need to mess around with settings to get rid of the chapter and page headings, but once you have the find and replace settings right, you can do hundreds.

I have four finished books in PDF files, totaling 1857 pages including over 600 photographs, which I need to convert to EPUB files in InDesign. I used a script to import all of the pages of one book into InDesign into a document reflecting the page and margin parameters of the original Microsoft Word document file. The imported PDF looked perfect in InDesign once I switched to a high-quality display performance in the View menu. However, when I exported the document into an EPUB file, I ran into two problems that I cannot fix.
That said, if the document is simple enough and all you have is a PDF you can try converting it using Calibre. I warn you however, that if you have no knowledge of HTML and CSS you are going to be in for a world of pain and should probably hire someone for a job this size unless you have an unlimited amount of time to do this.
If I use Adobe Indesign CS5 I can get high quality text and images, but it's a lot of work (for me, anyway). Is this the only way to go or is there some way I can convert MSWord and keep high (300 ppi) uncompressed images?

I found that the Previewer and the DOS KindleGen produce identical MOBI files, so I recommend the previewer for its ease of use. After extensive testing I have found the Kindle InDesign plugin will perfectly convert the text from InDesign; however, it fails to size, place and display photographs and captions in all cases. It also does not render the InDesign TOC correctly. But remember, it is Beta software . I sent in a bug list to Amazon via the Export Book to Kindle dialog in InDesign and never got a response, but presumably someone is working on the problems and will eventually get them fixed. On the other hand, currently the Previewer perfectly displays photographs in a MOBI file when the InDesign EPUB file is fed into it; and the only problem with the text is that the line spacing is incorrect so paragraph lines are somewhat scrunched together. While this is not a problem for developing a book, I would wait until the final release of the Kindle Plugin for InDesign before generating and publishing a MOBI book.
I just have the same problem, I found this question. I tried Calibri several months ago, and I was unimpressed by the way it ignored common word processor attributes like paragraph indents, italics, footnoting, et, to convert PDF to ePub,there are many program can do it, like Vibosoft PDF to ePub, iStonsoft PDF to ePub converter and Coolmuter MOBi to ePub. Having worked for ten years as a senior architect designing database driven dynamic browser-based software applications similar to those later produced successfully by Siebel Systems (now defunct), I an not interested in buggy software. This is why I chose the Adobe solution.
I've removed DRMs from books bought from Amazon Kindle (AZW3 format) and I had to put the Kindle's identification number (or whatever is called) to remove the Amazon's DRM and then convert it to PDF so I can read on my PC.
EDIT: It worked like a charm. The online store gave me a URL of GET request which contains the file in its payload (very hacky, good that I'm web dev). Downloaded the ACSM file, then opened it in the special Adobe app which downloaded the EPUB file. I had to search for it - it's in User/Documents... Downloaded the recent beta version of De-DRM (compatible with my Calibre version). Then I just re-uploaded the EPUB to Calibre and the DRM was gone. Then I converted to MOBI and got the book on my Kindle. Very complicated but in my country we don't make ebooks for Kindle due to legal issues. A publisher must give the translated ebook to Amazon so they will upload it as azw3 and get % of the income of course. So I bought it as DRM'ed EPUB, removed the DRM and converted to MOBI.

Once installed I simply opened the ePUB files that I checked out & downloaded with Adobe Digital Edition, and then converted them from within Calibre (right click on any book and select "Convert Books -> Convert Individually" and select MOBI as the output format.
I want to write a small linux tool that automates the download of eBooks. From my online library I can download an ACSM file. Now I need a step to automatically download the epub file. From what I've read this step is called fulfilment. The tool shall run on a headless server.
I hope you can understand my frustration. All I want to do is read the book that I legally purchased on my laptop so that I can complete my homework and get on with my life. I tried using other eBook readers like Calibre but it requires that I convert my ACSM file to EPUB using Adobe Digital Editions (which doesn't work for me). What other alternatives do I have?
The question is quite old, but people like myself still trip up on DRM locked ebooks. I assume you want to get out of the acsm a DRM-free epub. My instruction is for Ubuntu/Debian using apt-get, but the tools exist for other distros as well. I need a couple of tools in particular: the DeDRM tool for python2.7 and wine. On wine, we will install Adobe Digital Editions, python and pip for windows
The program is gratis and libre. This isn't a client/reader per se, it just let's you convert the ACSM file to a DRM-free EPUB file, which you can then read with any gratis EPUB reader. It also works for ACSM files that point to PDFs.
