In this part of the course you will be introduced to the concepts of
defining a market and dominant position and you will also see what a
dominant company can and cannot do. Remember, the issues covered in this
part of the course apply only where a company is dominant. The following
is a list of what you will learn about. Click next to continue.

How to define a market

What is a dominant position?

Abusive pricing

Refusing to supply

The first thing to do when working out if a company holds a dominant
position is to identify the market in which it operates. The wider the
market is defined, the smaller the company's share of the market will be
and the less likely it will be to affect competition. When defining a
market, competition authorities will take into consideration both the
product market and the geographic market. Click next to continue.

BADCO

02 JULY

As an example let's take a cola product called ChocCola. What is the
relevant market? Click next to continue.

ChocCola

Firstly, you need to consider the products which form part of the same
market. Click next to continue.

Is it: ChocCola? Cola-flavoured drinks? Fizzy drinks? Non-alcoholic
drinks? Click next to continue.

ChocCola may have a big market share of ChocCola drinks but a small share
of the non-alcoholic drink market. Click next to continue.

Market share

How do you decide? Ask the following questions: Do the other products cost
the same? Do they have the same characteristics? Are they used for the
same thing? Click next to continue.

If the answer to these questions is yes, these products are probably in
the same market. Click next to continue.

You also need to consider what geographic market you are in. Is it local,
UK, EU or worldwide? Click read more for more information. Click next to
continue or menu to choose another topic.

If you have information in relation to the markets in which you operate,
this page can be used to display that information or insert a link to
internal guidelines.

Market Share

Competition law prohibits companies that hold a dominant position in the
market from abusing their power. So how do you know if a company is
dominant? Click next to continue.

Total Market

A company holds a dominant position if it can do what it likes without
worrying too much about its competitors' and customers' reactions.
Generally this could happen where a company has a market share of at least
40%. Remember, holding a dominant position is not prohibited - abusing it
is! Click next to continue. or click menu to choose another topic.
