The first 10 days of Dhul Hijja are blessed days which have many benefits. The importance of the 10 blessed days stems from its Quranic roots as God swore by these days when He says, “By the dawn , And [by] ten nights” (89:1,2) and God’s oath is a definite indication of its virtues and high honor. God also specified invoking and worshipping Him especially in these days as He called them in the Quran as the “known days” God says, “That they may witness benefits for themselves and mention the name of Allah on known days…”( 22:28) Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) indicated that doing good deeds during these blessed days are the most beloved in God’s sight and the most rewarding.
It was reported through ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar that Prophet Muhammad said, “no days are greater in God’s sight and no good deeds are more beloved to God than those performed during the first 10 days of Dhul Hijja so make sure to make abundant invocation of God through takbir (saying Allahu Akbar), tahlil (saying la ilaha illa Allah) and tahmid (saying alhamdulelah).” This means that these 10 days are a divine gift and a starting point of God’s grace which we should seize through purifying our souls, developing the world and worshipping God. Prophet Muhammad reiterated the virtues of worshipping God during these days as al Tirmidhi reported that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Fasting one day of these 10 days equals fasting the whole year and praying the night vigil in any of its nights equals praying in the Night of Power”.
Regarding the day of ‘Arafa, it is a sunnah for the non pilgrim Muslim to fast this day as Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Fasting the day of ‘Arafa expiates the sins of the past year and the coming one”. Therefore these coming days is a new opportunity to turn a new leaf in our relationship with God and start fresh through repentance and constant invocation of God along with reading Quran and doing charity work.
We should also seize these days to change our bad habits and inappropriate behaviors and replace our bad characteristics with good ones. We should embrace beautiful manners and stick to high ethical standards. We should change our attitude towards life through altering our behavior inside out and fill our hearts with love and mercy which will automatically flow to the hearts of those who surround us.
