Baviaanskloof and Antoniesberg Pass

Hi All,
We're planning on driving through Baviaanskloof from West to East and then head North before Patensie, swinging left over Antoniesberg Pass to Steytlerville.

Some advice please:

• We don't intend to stay at an ECP campsite, but rather at some private chalet on the West side.
  In this case, do we just arrive at the West Gate and pay a permit fee?
  The ECP website seems to only allow pre-booking of campsites, yet says "Don't just arrive".
  
  
• Has anyone recently driven the 4x4 road from the East side to Steytlerville via Antoniesberg Pass? 
  What is its condition and ride-type? (rocky/sandy/???)
  
  
• Any other locked gates, permission to drive or other formalities we need be aware of?

We'll be solo driving a Defender 110.

Good day,

I did exactly your planned trip twice but long ago. The reason: Karin Theron of T4A aroused our curiosity. She did it on a motorbike. Search the T4A website for it. Baviaans indeed is an experience.

We camped in the Baviaans. Have no fear for Doodsklip Campsite (or what was the name again...)

We enjoyed hospitality twice at Finchley Farm Guesthouse at Steytlerville, which we liked enough to come back.

I can't help you with recent developments.

But the T4A community will help no doubt.

Hallo Zoltan,

I did thr trip east to West in 2022, I camped at Duuwekloof in the west and Kudu Khaya in the east and highly recommend both campsites. They also offer lodging if you are not camping.

I just arrived at the park entry gate and paid my fee there. To my horror I discovered then that my Wild Card does not include EC parks! But the entry fee was not much - if I remember correctly I could not pay by card, only cash.

Unfortunately I did not do Antoniesberg Pass, but if you follow Mountain Passes SA on Facebook I think that route is part of his Baviaanskloof tour, you should get some recent info from there.

You do not have to stay over in the park. You can pay an entrance fee and drive through.

I have been over the Antoniesberg Pass route several times. Lots of gates. The road willl be fine for your Defender. I have always done the route in the other direction because one needs to cross the Grootriver near Steytlerville. If the river is to high you need to turn back. Coming from Steytlerville it is easy to turn back. Travelling in the direction you intend to means that you have to return three hours over Antoniesberg. Read the description of the pass on Mountain Passes South Africa

I have booked in at Ingwe and then depending on conditions we will either go to Cradock via Steytlerville or Kariega.
