We got it working again after doing a soft reset, but wondered what had caused it to stop when it was navigating. Battery is fully charged, software is up to date. No other apparent issues. It is on a cradle on the windscreen. Could it have over heated? It is new, but we have been using it, following a route for two weeks in hot weather so a little mystified as to why it just stopped today. Trying to understand so it does not happen again.

Hi Katie,

If it switched itself off it is likely because of the heat. Try to mount it away from direct sunlight, or I use a folded map or A4 sheet of paper (in 2021 my covid mask did double duty in Namibia!) over the top to give it some shade.

Usually if it turns off because of heat it won't turn on again unless it has been off a few hours - you can try to keep it in front of the air conditioner vent to cool it down faster (it works well if you have a cup holder that is positioned in front of the air vent with cold air coming out).

I also encountered similar problems with my 700i. Garmin replace it twice, and now I have a 710i, which is doing the same. It only happens when I am navigating.

Hi Gert,

I had a Montana 650 and now drive on the Montana 700 - they don't like the African heat. To cool it down quicker, remove the battery as well and try to put both device and battery in front of the aircon vent. In January, outside Garies (40 degrees outside) I managed to get it going again in less than 30 minutes. In September last year, arriving at 2pm at Pioneer GAte border post (45 degrees) I had to leave it overnight before it would work again - but that was before I tried the air con trick!

Correct Lizette.
Direct sunlight & extreme heat will prematurely destroy the battery as well.

This is how I shaded my Garmin 276 from the heat…it never stopped working and we did a lot of travelling…

Ditto here, covered it with a different material, the trick is to keep the direct sunlight off it.

Thanks. We’ll rig up a cover as you suggest.

My Montana 750 switches itself off regularly, seemingly regardless of temperature.  Starts straight up again when you press the On button.

Typically happens 2 - 3 times per day.

That is exactly my experience with the 710 Graham.

I hope I'm not hijacking this thread with my problem. I have a Nuvi 2689 for many years with many kilometres logged. The problem I have is that the connection at the back (power supply) is warn out and does not give a constant power supply.  I have tried several newer cables with the same result.  Can this connection on the Nuvi be replaced and if so by whom?

Chris

I have used some sharp nose pliers and tried to "pull" the outer edges closer together again for the connector to have a tighter fit. That seemed to help a bit as a plan-B.

Hi Chris,

If Danie's fix don't work, you have to contact Garmin direct - they will ask you to send the device to them, and then give a verdict if they can fix it or not. Use the support email: https://www.garmin.com/en-ZA/company/contact/
