HI all

Some help please. We want to travel from Gariep Dam to The Caven soon but are confused about the time this will take and if possible in a day.

I used Basecamp with T4A maps,  T4A Trip Planner, Google and the T4A Travellers Atlas printed map. Get different results.

We do not want to travel on the freeways and thus trying to travel the back roads, so to speak. The possible route is below. Does anyone have any experience with our proposed route?

Gariep to Smithfield to Wepenar to Ladybrand to Clocolan to Ficksburg to Fouriesburg to The Cavern via R174 & Golden Gate N-Park and R74 to The Cavern. Very close to Mont Aux Sources resort.

Basecamp gives me 640 - 9hrs
Google gives me 546kms - 6hrs:30
T4A Trip Planner gives me 566kms - 7hrs:14
T4A Maps 708kms - 9hrs

So the only one that looks reasonable is Google, but I do not trust their routes for this type of travel.

Any suggestions from anyone that might have done something similar?

Charles this info is from OsmAnd.
Be aware that generally these roads are heavily pot holed with lots of heavy trucks in certain sections.
Cheers, Brett

Hi Charles,

I'm not clear on what tools you used to create the route - I used the 25.06 T4A maps on Mapsource/Basecamp and following your route I get 586kms and 8hrs 08minutes.

Your kilometers below for Basecamp/Google/Trip planner are close(ish) in distances, the 100-odd difference will come in depending on the program you used and the routing settings - do you have any avoidances on, are you working on the fastest route, etc.

Basecamp gives me 640 - 9hrs - which map did you use here, T4A or Street Maps?
Google gives me 546kms - 6hrs:30
T4A Trip Planner gives me 566kms - 7hrs:14 (this is close to the 586kms and 8hrs I get on the 25.06 maps on Basecamp - just not sure about the hour difference in travel time here)
T4A Maps 708kms - 9hrs - what do you mean by T4A maps here - is it still Basecamp but using T4A and not street maps? Or is this calculated on the GPS?

Thanks Bret from your side
This concurs with what I am finding, too long for a single day.

Hi Lizette

On Basecamp I used the T4A map 25 06 01.

I did tweek my route a few mins ago on Basecamp and got something similar to your numbers. New numbers using basecamp are 564kms with 8h travel time.

Using "fastest route" with no avoidances on using Basecamp.

The T4A printed Map - used the actual mileage number on the printed maps and then added them up including the estimated times provided from the hard copy map. I did have to some guessing however as the printed mileage did not always fit in with what I needed. I attach my calculations from reading the Maps, for interest.

Best Regards,

Hi Charles,

Thank you for the clarification - the electronic versions will always be the most up to date with regards to travel times, as these are continuously updated. The printed version is static because of the obvious static nature of printed products!

I can second Fouriesburg Country Inn. Stayed there many times when I worked for Rand Water and we went to Lesotho Highlands water Scheme. At that time the owner was someone with a surname of Craig whose wife used to be my daughter's school teacher in Alberton.

I wonder if its the same owner.
