I am planning a trip in Botswana in June and I am looking to rent a StarLink mini to use during the trip, may be picking it up in Lobatse. Does anyone know of a source in Botswana to rent one?

Thank you

Hi Kobus,

I'm not aware of any rentals in SA, there are a few in SA though - you can try Sat4Rent that has expanded to also renting out Starlink. It is pretty pricey to rent though, and Botswana is quite cheap with their mini at the moment - P2,400 (R3,000) for the mini, and then you have to add the month subscription (about R1,200 for 50gigs). If you plan to travel frequently to Botswana and other countries where you can use Starlink, it may be worth your while to buy one for yourself - just pop into Sefalana in Lobatse.

Presuming you need it to stay in contact with family or work - else there is nothing wrong with being off-grid for a few days, and Botswana is well-travelled, help will be along soon if you run into a problem!

Kind regards

Lizette

Hi Lizette and Kobus,

Not meaning to hijack the conversation here but are we able to purchase the units in SA yet? I know it's not yet available here (following the progress very closely) but just want to check if we can purchase units as yet?

Kind Regards,

Brett

Hi Brett,

Purchase are not possible in SA, no - there are some people that will sell you in, but they usually bring it in from Europe and you pay a small fortune for the device only as it is more expensive in Europe and the States (in the States they are currently giving minis away for free to residential users!)

I purchased a Mini online through Starlink last year, delivering to the first camp where I stayed in Livingstone - the unit arrived at DHL in Livingstone within 8 days (from the States) and they agreed to keep it there until you can collect.

Starlink will work in SA but for how long varies - some get cut off after 2 hours, other 2 weeks and some get 2 months. But once you have used it in SA, if you leave and return, it immediately gets restricted.

There is a very informative "Starlink Users South Africa" Facebook page - I am regurgitating what I have gathered from there :-) I only use mine to travel in other countries.

Thanks Lizette & Brett,

I am well aware off the trials and tribulations around StarLink in South Africa, that is why I want to rent in Botswana (not South Africa), and am not particularly interested in purchasing a StarLink subscription in Botswana. It is a two-week trip that will take us outside cell reception in Kgalagadi (Mabua) & Central Kalahari, we will be 3-4 vehicles and want peace of mind to have connectivity if we get into trouble and in general to stay in contact with the outside world. I do not travel often in Botswana or Namibia (maybe twice in 3 years on average).

Regards

Kobus
