I’m looking at getting a garmin and in between the driveluxe 50 complete and nuvi 3597LM.

Both are in the right price range for me but don’t know which is better (I don’t really know much about any garmin)

Any advice or tips would help or if you have one of them any cons or pros.
Thanks

Afternoon,

I asked Gemini to do a quick comparison of the 2 that I will add below. In essence both are street navigators. The DriveLuxe have add diver alerts that you can see in par 3 below. They are the same size and depending on the model of the Nuvi it can have either 8Gb or 16Gb of intrernal memory. As can be seen in par 1 the DriveLuxe has much better smartphone integration where you can see some phone alerts directly on the GPS. It also has Wi-Fi that you can use for updates and you don't have to physically connect to a PC.

Both the Garmin nüvi 3597LM (and its HD/T traffic variants) and the Garmin DriveLuxe series (primarily the DriveLuxe 50 and 51) represent Garmin’s top-tier, premium "Prestige" line of automotive GPS navigators.
The nüvi 3597LM is widely regarded as a legendary device in Garmin's history for its ultra-premium build quality, and the DriveLuxe line was introduced as its spiritual successor. While they look physically identical at a glance—sharing a sleek, brushed metal casing and a powered magnetic mount—there are key generational and software specification differences between them.
Hardware and Display Specifications
Mechanically and aesthetically, the two units are incredibly similar, but the DriveLuxe introduced a few modern hardware efficiencies.
  • Form Factor & Build: Both devices feature a premium, sleek anodized aluminum housing rather than the standard plastic backs found on cheaper models.
  • The Magnetic Mount: Both utilize Garmin’s highly praised powered magnetic mount. The vehicle power cable plugs directly into the windshield cradle, meaning you can pull the GPS unit off the mount instantly without messing with wires.
  • Display: Both use a crisp 5.0-inch (12.7 cm) pinch-to-zoom capacitive glass screen with dual-orientation capabilities (allowing vertical or horizontal viewing).
  • Internal Storage: The nüvi 3597 typically shipped with 8 GB of internal storage (though later production batches and regional variants sometimes had 16 GB). The DriveLuxe standardizes on 16 GB of internal storage, giving it more headroom for expanding map files without immediately requiring a microSD card.
Software & Connectivity Upgrades
The primary differences lie in the processor generation, connectivity protocols, and software ecosystem. The DriveLuxe benefits from being a newer platform generation.
1. Smart Notifications and Bluetooth
  • nüvi 3597LM: Uses Bluetooth strictly for basic hands-free mobile calling and linking to the legacy Smartphone Link app for basic weather and traffic data updates.
  • DriveLuxe: Features a much deeper smartphone integration. It supports on-screen Smart Notifications, allowing you to read incoming SMS text messages, calendar reminders, and app alerts directly on the GPS screen while driving.
2. Wi-Fi Connectivity
  • nüvi 3597LM: Has no Wi-Fi. All map updates and firmware flashes must be done by physically connecting the device to a computer via a USB cable using the Garmin Express application.
  • DriveLuxe (specifically the 51 series): Includes built-in Wi-Fi. It can connect directly to a home network to download and update map regions and software updates without needing a PC.
3. Advanced Driver Alerts
The DriveLuxe includes a modern software suite of preventative safety alerts that the nüvi 3597 lacks. The DriveLuxe will flash and beep to notify you of:
  • Sharp curves ahead.
  • Speed limit changes.
  • School zones.
  • Fatigue warnings (suggesting break spots after consecutive hours of driving).
  • Wrong-way driving on one-way streets.
4. Travel Points of Interest (POI) Partnerships
  • nüvi 3597LM: Relies entirely on Garmin’s proprietary preloaded database of businesses and addresses.
  • DriveLuxe: Integrates direct third-party search APIs. It includes preloaded data from Foursquare and TripAdvisor, complete with user ratings and reviews for hotels, restaurants, and attractions along your route.

Performance Notes
If you are deciding between deploying one or the other, real-world user feedback notes that the older nüvi 3597 is highly efficient at processing complex multi-point routing files natively and boots up remarkably fast. However, the DriveLuxe handles large modern map data files much better without running out of internal memory workspace and is simpler to maintain over time due to the wireless update feature.

I now also saw that one gets a 50 and 51 derivative of the DriveLuxe. The 50 does not have Wi-Fi and some other small changes.

While the DriveLuxe 50 and DriveLuxe 51 look identical from the outside—featuring the exact same sleek brushed-aluminum body, 5-inch capacitive glass touch screen, and powered magnetic cradle—the DriveLuxe 51 represents an internal hardware refresh.
The primary differences come down to connectivity, map updates, and a few smart feature expansions:
1. Built-in Wi-Fi (The Biggest Change)
  • DriveLuxe 50: Does not have Wi-Fi. To update your maps or software, you must bring the device inside, plug it into a computer via a USB cable, and use the Garmin Express program.
  • DriveLuxe 51: Includes built-in Wi-Fi. When you park your car within range of your home Wi-Fi network, the device will alert you to available updates on-screen. You can run the entire map download over-the-air without ever needing a PC.
2. Live Traffic & Delivery Methods
Garmin changed how traffic data is packaged and handled between these two iterations:
  • DriveLuxe 50 (typically "LMT-HD"): Shipped standard with a specialized vehicle power cable containing a built-in HD Digital Traffic receiver. It pulls traffic updates directly from over-the-air radio signals without requiring any mobile data.
  • DriveLuxe 51 (typically "LMT-S"): Transitioned to relying primarily on Live Traffic via the Smartphone Link app. The "S" stands for smartphone traffic. It pairs via Bluetooth to your phone to fetch highly precise, real-time traffic and weather data. While it reacts faster to sudden road closures, it does rely on your phone's cellular data connection. (Note: You can still use an older GTM-series traffic antenna cable with the 51 if you want off-grid radio traffic).
3. Smart Watch Integration & LiveTrack
The DriveLuxe 51 added integration with Garmin's broader wearable ecosystem and safety tracking:
  • Garmin Smartwatch Pairing: The 51 can link directly to a compatible Garmin watch (like a Fenix or Forerunner). If you park your car in a massive parking lot, the watch will save the GPS coordinates and guide you back to your vehicle using a digital compass. It will also mirror basic driver alerts (like sharp curve warnings) right on your wrist.
  • LiveTrack: The 51 supports Garmin’s LiveTrack protocol via the mobile app. This allows you to share your active road trip route with family members so they can view your live progress on a map in real-time.
4. Advanced Parking & Incident Notifications
  • Live Parking: The 51 introduced real-time parking data trends. When approaching major city centers or popular public destinations, it can display pricing and availability trends for on-street public parking.
  • Incident Notifications: The 51 includes an automatic incident detection protocol. If the internal accelerometer registers a sudden, severe impact (suggesting a collision), it can trigger your paired smartphone to send an automated SMS text message to a pre-designated emergency contact with a map link to your exact coordinates.
Summary
If you want a device that requires less maintenance hassle, the DriveLuxe 51 wins out purely on its ability to handle massive map updates effortlessly over Wi-Fi. If you prefer completely off-grid traffic tracking without linking a smartphone app, the DriveLuxe 50 bundle with its dedicated hardware traffic receiver cord is highly capable.
