Hi All, My wife and i would like to visit Gonarezhou in August this year. Do you think its ok for a couple to travel alone in our Iveco 4x4 Daily. Just wondering about crossing the cause ways and driving through the heavy sand on the rivers edge as well. Any advise would be appreciated please. We will cross to Mozambique at Pafuri and the into Zim after that.
Regards

You should have no trouble with the Iveco.

Hi Chris,

We just came back from Gonarezhou a week ago.  We also went via Pafuri and took the road next to the Zim border up to Chiqualaquala and then into Zim (take note of the border times).  There are 2 river crossings, Limpopo (low water level) and Nuanetsi (dry).  The sand there is OK with low tyre pressures and momentum.  4x4 is definitely required on the route but is not a car breaker at all.  It is a long day however as the road requires slow traveling.  For the first night in Gonarezhou, don’t book deep into the park as the day is too short.  Try and stay in the Mabaluauta Camp for the first night. The road through Moz is overgrown and your vehicle will pick up a lot of scratches.  Height may be a problem, so take something along to cut branches.  One of our vehicles towed a MobiLodge and required us to prune the overhead overgrowth at places.  We were 4  vehicle towing 3 caravans & 1 trailer.  There is fuel at Chiqualaquala about 1 km out of town on the Mapai road.

The journey through Moz was very pleasant from a 4x4 perspective, but the corruptness of the officials really spoiled it for us.  Everyone wanted some money on the side.  The Zim side is totally the opposite where the people are very friendly and extremely helpful and speaks a very good English.  Rands are accepted everywhere.

The Gonarezhou staff is very, very helpful.  We had to make changes to our itinerary and they went out of their way to help us.  Gonarezhou is beautiful with some really beautiful camping sites.  You have to be totally self sufficient for most of the camp sites with a long drop as the only luxury item.  Only a few camp sites are developed with ablutions & water.

Best Regards,

Willem Doman

As Mike said no problem with the vehicle per se but you must consider that you might suffer a little more than bush scratches to your vehicle .. it is large.

Definately possible with an Iveco.
Just be aware of the weight restrictions applicable in Gonarezhou - you will only be allowed to lumited roads if above 3500kg.

Never needed police clearance for Zim, but Zambia sometimes require it.
Colin
Do not know of camping North of Buluwayo. Just south there is various at Matopos though. Try the IOverlander app which i have found indispensable lately in sourcing camping.

Hi Leon.

Thanks for the detailed info. My wife and i wil be traveling to Mana Pools from Hermanus during August 2024. I have decided to give Beitbridge a skip and travel through Botswana. I presume the process for entering Zim via Bots would be similar?

I would also appreciate it if there is any one that could suggest a safe and comfortable camping ground north of Bulawayo halfway or so to Mana Pools. Actually any advice will be welcome as we are traveling alone towing our Chobe.

Thanks all and safe travels.

Hi Colin,

Use the Tracks4Africa online map: https://map.tracks4africa.co.za/map and turn on the camping site icons on the right and you will see all the camping sites in the T4A data - Zimbabwe was thoroughly researched last year in preparation for our guide book, so our data is very complete for Zimbabwe.

I would aim for Antelope Park outside Gweru, or an Eye for the Wild outside Kwekwe. If you get as far as Chinhoyi, the caves campsite has renovated the ablutions and are not bad, else 18kms north, Romsay Farm bushcamp is very nice.

Instead of the online map, you can also download the Tracks4Africa guide app and purchase the Africa Map and Zimbabwe travel guide - it gives you offline access to all the information, plus you can see your GPS position on the screen so you can orientate yourself easily.

Good luck and enjoy Zim, it is a stunning country with the most welcoming people!

Regards/Groete

Thanks for the comprehensive info Leon, this will certainly help us when we go in August. Is a police clearance certificate for vehicles necessary when crossing through Beit Bridge.

@Colin

Near Gweru you find the Antelope Park which offers a nice Campground. This one is perfect for an overnight stay.

If you want to go further, you can go to Lions Den Campsite (appx 20 km north of Chinhoyi). Stop at the Lions Den Butchery on the road and book there. The Campsite is some Kilometers away at a nice Dam. Both are highly recommended.

Have fun!
