I have just completed a fantastic trip to Zimbabwe. Planned using T4A trip planner. A great tool

However, I did experience one appalling road. It was the worst road that I have ever driven. I am truly surprised that I didn't burst all 6 tyres (trailer).  I don't think a vehicle has driven it in 50 years!

So my question is: how do I get T4A trip planner to ignore such roads?

Below is a link to my adventure.

https://map.tracks4africa.co.za/share?shareToken=02a89e31-c328-4659-b88a-4cb87bdb6f28

This is the route: ROMELDA RETREAT - TREE HOUSE PROJECT

Is the attached file, the road in the red oval is the one to be avoided.
The road to take is indicated by blue straight lines

Please educate me!!!!!

Thanks
Tim

Good morning Tim!

Glad you enjoyed your Zimbabwean adventure and find the Trip Planner useful!

One suggestion would be to check the "leg information" of each route that you created, you can see how long that specific section of the route will take to drive, and the distance - from here you can work out the average speed you should travel at, in this case it would be about 30 to 30kph. Of course, in this case, it sounds like the road as deteriorated much since someone last sent us an update from here, so it would not have helped you to change the route - but it could help with future route planning! Also, driving with a trailer adds extra difficulties, vehicles that are not towing will be able to tackle the road a bit faster.

How to avoid the road in future - we use updates from people, such as yours comment, to update the road conditions - so our very capable GIS team will now add something in our data that will give preference to the route that you have indicated, so future travellers will be routed along the preferred/better route.

We can only update the roads from feedback like this, so please keep it coming! If you have perhaps recorded your tracks on GPS, that will also be very useful to us - no worries if the roads already exist, we update travel times from there and confirm they are still in use, all tracks are used!

You can also submit a correction on the trip planner - "long click" with the left mouse button, and a red waypoint marker will pop up, select "suggest a correction" and give us as much information as possible - your travel time along this road will be useful too, so we can see how slow it is!

And then of course, you have people like me, that look at this road and made a note.... let's use this road! I'm very happy getting off the main roads and seeing less traffic - but of course I usually have a lot more time available when travelling!

BTW last year I drove the notorious Katima Mulilo to Kazungula road in Zambia - it was officially the worst road I have yet travelled in Africa, although the road down to Sinazongwe came very close, just the fact that it was shorter saved it from being listed in my back as the worst road! And the current roadworks should much improve it in the next 6 to 12 months. So with my next visit to Zimbabwe I am heading to Tilbury to give this one a try! :-)

@Lizette please don't change anything other than add a note.
Like you, some of us prefer to traverse through Africa on the roads less traveled to avoid the crowds ;)

Good morning Brett,

I am hoping that Tim has recorded his tracks, then we can use the actual travel time to update the data, this would be first prize. On the trip planner, like the GPS, there is an option for "faster travel time" or "minimise distance", and the "faster time" should reflect the condition on the road, while the "alternative" route is much left to individual preference. But adding that note is a great idea, I will do that now!

Hi Lizette
How can I send you my recorded tracks?
They are still on my 276cx!

Thanks

Hi Tim,

Oh no, we need to rectify that!

Please connect the GPS to the computer with the USB cable. If you have Basecamp, then open Basecamp. At the top left of Basecamp, click on "device - receive from device" and everything will export to a folder on the left. Once done (it may take some time, wait for the little red progress line to become green), select your folder with today's date (I selected 8 June in the image) and then select "file-export-export xxx - in my case 8 June) and save it as a GPX file somewhere on your computer. Now you attach this gpx file to an email and email to me or to new...@tracks4africa.co.za - either way I will get it.

If you don't use Basecamp, then still attach the GPS to the computer, and navigate to the internal memory - there will be a folder called "GPX", you may find it under "Garmin" and then "GPX", the path is different on different devices.

Right click on that folder, and "zip" it so it is smaller, and then you email the zipped folder to me - it is important to send the whole folder please, our GIS team can now export that data from the folder and use it to update our maps!

Looking forward to seeing your tracks and get a nice update for Zim!

Lizette
