Hi All

Is it a good idea to use Halali as a 3-night base, or will it be better to sleep in other places as well?

We will camp in Etosha, sleeping 27, 28 and 29 April 2026. We hear that Okaukuejo can get very busy, so would prefer a place with less people. We hear the view over the dam at night can also be very good.

During the day we will self drive.

Thank you

Best regards / Vriendelike groete

Hi Francois,

I far prefer Halali to Okaukuejo, it is quieter, and the waterhole has a more rustic and natural feel to it (take pillows to sit on, those rocks are hard!). And the black rhino is frequently spotted here. Okaukuejo is more popular with the tourists, as access is easier via Anderson Gate (now called Ombika Gate), and the waterhole does see a lot of wildlife too, hence its popularity.

The "new" camp in the west (Olifantsrus - and no it is no longer new!) is still on my list, I hear good things about it. So if you don't mind travelling, you could do a night at Halali, a night at Okaukuejo, and a night at Olifantsrus, using the travel between the camps as "all day game drives". Or if you prefer to be stationary, use Halali as your base and explore - I've seen cheetah here a few times as well.

Regards/Groete

Lizette

Francois, as Lizette stated the waterhole is fantastic. Almost nightly Sightings of Blackies. I have had good sightings of Leopard and Hyena there as well. Be prepared for long nights .. cushions, blankets, food and drink. You don't want to be schlepping backwards and forwards to your camp to fetch stuff.
Also bear in mind that you are in the middle of the white talcum powder dust region .. if the wind gets up, head to the ablutions for some relief. We spent an afternoon and the night camped out in the ablutions.
Enjoy your trip

Cheers
Brett
