Hi,
I'm looking for info on the condition of the cut-line route between Kang and Xade gate. From previous experience, this was a far better and shorter route (just sandy) than going via the Ghanzi access route.

Any recent experience would be welcome :-)

Thanks,
Attie

Hi Attie,

I drove it last year September - deep sand except where it crosses the pans, there it was a hard track with the occasional meerkat / warthog hole (watch out for those!).

With all the rain Botswana had earlier this year, I expect those pans would've filled and I don't know what those sections are like now. I expect it will be pretty dry again as the last rains fell around early April. But someone here may have more recent experience.

The track was pretty deep, the cutline very straight - it is easy to pick up speed and go too fast, I had two narrow escapes when I shot out of the track. Take it easy.

Regards/Groete

Also be careful of elephants. They have moved that far south and have damaged water infrastructure in Xade camp itself in the past. They can be quite grumpy at times so be on the lookout for them.
Cheers,  Brett

Lizette,
Was just concerned that there may be locked gates or other barricades put up since I last used it. All the other comments noted. We always take things easy as it only takes one incident to really screw up your trip.
Thanks for the feedback

Hallo Attie,

No gates or vet fences, no - I double checked at Xade gate when I exited and they said it is not a problem to drive.

Was actually a great drive - very quiet!

Feedback on the cutline route is that the easterly leg was absolutely perfect, with the northerly section being just as easy to drive apart from the last +-10km where it got quite sandy. The section towards Xade from where you exit the cutline was terrible and slow (as were all my prior experiences).

Also note that the CKGR road from Xade going north to Piper Pan is very overgrown at the moment and, if you drive a new vehicle and value your paintwork, I would certainly recommend avoiding this part of the reserve.

From Piper Pan all the way to Deception was good.

Regards,
Attie
