Ugab River Rhino Camp

Hi All

The information on tracks4africa shows that maybe this camp is not a good idea anymore? But, the last message from 2021 shows that mineworkers inhabited the camp. Is this still true? My reason for asking is that we would like to drive around in the area (sleep 2 nights) to see if we can spot the desert elephants and/or rhinos.

If the camp is not a good idea, any suggestions for another camping spot in the area?

I tried the ugab...@hotmail.com email address, but, no response after a week.

The website provided on T4A is for the Save the Rhino project:https://www.savetherhinotrust.org/, maybe try those contact details? I've added this to my list for Namibia next year, thank you!

I have camped here on several trips. You may well be the only grouo in camp but that is what I like.

Come with everything you need. You can do trips from here north or east, or drive around the mountain tracks. Lovely area.

That's one of my favourites. And from there Northwards to Twijfelfontein via Desolation Valley / Organ Pipes or to Doro Nawas via Huab River. Adventure. Take enough water.

We camped there just one night in October 2024 and had a great time. There was only one other Dutch couple in the entire camp. A young local family was taking care of the site and the small ‘museum’ about the fate of desert Rhino’s.

Showers had been demolished a year earlier by elephants, but toilets (pit) were good. You need to be fully self sufficient though (no running water).

Driving the Ugab riverbed eastward and then over Divorce pass was great and relatively easy to do (provided you have a good equipped 4WD). Scenery is desolate and fantastic!
