Dear Travellers,

We intend do drive in August 2027 from Namibia to Angola. We will be 2 4x4. I wonder whether anyone has recently taken the road that goes through the park but spares the doodsakker. (See highlighted in red). I would appreciate your experiences.

Thank you very much in advance

 Christian

Hi Christian,

We just came out of Iona yesterday, I have confirmed with African parks that the route through the dunes are not visible (covered by sand) and not open to the public. Only guides that know the dunes use this route.

The public may travel from Foz du Cunene to Baia dos Tigres and then have to tackle the "doodsakker" north. Or return to Espinheira (fairly good tracks and totally worth the travel!) and then exit via Salondjamba or Pediva.

We had a lovely swim at the Pediva hot springs, camped there for the night, and tackled the road in the morning. Fairly easy going, some gravel, some stones, some sand. Arrived in Tombua around 3pm (with a detour to the Colinhas). Can highly recommend this route!

Do not tackle the "doodsakker" on your own, and not without an experienced guide.

Iona is a stunning park, remote and adventurous!

Kind regards
