Even as we are recovering from traumatic memories of Yadayya's suicide, today another youngster, by name Veeraswamy, immolated himself in Jagtyal town of Karimnagar district. He too apparantly left a suicide note stating his wish that his death should contribute to the creation of Telangana state. Reports say that his condition is serious. God forbid, by the time this mail is being read by everyone, we may be hearing about yet another death. Yesterday Yadayya, before that Venugopal Reddy, Srikatha Chary, ...., it is a count that no one wishes to keep, even as everyone is conscious that it has crossed two hundred!Government, on record, acknowledged that these are protest suicides demanding creation of a separate state. Chief Minister Rosaiah, while saying that the creation of Telangana state is not in hands of State Government, but of the Central government, made an appeal to the Telangana youth in the A.P. Assembly not to commit suicides. But the suicides do not seem to abate. Several youth in many private and public meetings are giving threatening slogans that they would give up their lives for the Telangana cause. Giving up one's life has acquired a particular connotation in the present context.Reactions to this genre of suicides have been many - from declaring them as martyrs to describing these as caused by personal crises. Some go to the extent of dubbing their suicide notes as faked ones, suspecting them to be murders. When Venugopal Reddy died, the state government ordered an inquiry, perhaps hoping to find a fould deed. Several people cuation that one should not make them martyrs fearing that it might trigger more suicides. Needless to comment on the level of insensivity demonstrated by the guilt-ridden politicians from Andhra who accuse Telangana leaders of instigating these suicides!Do all those lower middle class and dalit-bahujan youth committing suicide see a ray of hope of getting a secure job in the Telangana state? Or at least hope to create an opportunity to earn a livelihood for others, who may otherwise have only to go back to the village to do virtual slavery? When I see these young men dying, I am reminded of the deaths of Irish republican protesters in early 1980s which I used to read about in the newspapers. Like them, one young man or woman seems to be giving up life to say that Telangana is a live issue for them. They are not organized or coordinated but one can't miss the sense of collective frustration in each of these deaths. Yadaiah, when he was being taken to the hospital asked the people around, "Anna, saadhinchama?" (Brother? Did I achieve what we wanted?)
It seems futile to search for rational explanations for these suicides. Every suicide, whether one likes it or not, is a statement of protest. They could be having several problems, personal, psychological, social, etc in their lives. But when they end their lives, all meaning of life ceases for them, only to continue it for others. Probably, thats all they want to happen....

Fight till your last breath to achieve the goal. But never give up life in self immolation and end the struggle to achieve the goal.
rights are taken, not given. Rights are not given on begging or falling on feet. Rights are taken by unrelenting struggle till the goal is achieved.
