Hi everyone -

Since there have been some recent off-list inquiries, here's the
current scoop on TrackBot example code. There are (or at least should
be) current links to these areas from the TrackBot web site, under
Support & Updates, Application Notes and Example Code, which takes
you to this page:
http://trackbot.systronix.com/AppNotes/allappnotes.html

The 2007 JavaOne Hands On Lab 7230 was pretty popular but at least
some of the non-Systronix online links to code are suffering from
"link rot", so there is a java.net Robotics community project with
the code. Here are all the projects (note that some are sub-projects
inside the links on this page, so clicking on a link that looks like
a project can lead to multiple other projects -- just to keep things
confusing):
http://community.java.net/projects/community/robotics

Here is the 7230 HOL code:
https://spottrackbot.dev.java.net/

And there is also a still-working link at the bottom of
http://trackbot.systronix.com/AppNotes/allappnotes.html

But note that it is now sort of obsolete since it doesn't support any
of the new features of SPOT or TrackBot added since 2007 May. It also
has some less-than-exemplary code in it, partly to work around some
SPOT serial issues - since fixed - which would not be a good template
for new projects. So (you ask) what should I use as a starting place
for my own projects?

Instead we recommend TrackBot Common V2 or Swarm-of-Brian:
https://trackbotcode.dev.java.net/

https://swarm-of-brian.dev.java.net/

You do need a free and painless java.net account to access this code,
along with some SubVersion tool. If you are using Eclipse, see:
http://www.practicalembeddedjava.com/tools/javatools.html

Most of the work we are doing right now is being put in
Swarm-of-Brian, and Brian is a very dedicated, cool guy... so check
out the project. More on this as the Fall 2008 semester progresses.

These are the two currently most active TrackBot projects. You
probably want to join both, at least as observers, and join the dev
mail lists for each.

Best regards

Bruce
