In August 2011, Marvel announced that a couple of short films, designed to be self-contained stories,[1] would be released direct-to-video.[2] Co-producer Brad Winderbaum said they were a "fun way to experiment with new characters and ideas" and expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) beyond the plots of the feature films. The first two shorts were made in conjunction with The Ebeling Group.[2] Winderbaum said the name of the shorts program was derived from the label used by Marvel Comics for their one-shot comics.[3]

One year after the events of Captain America: The First Avenger,[15] Strategic Scientific Reserve Agent Peggy Carter is stuck compiling data instead of working field cases. One night, while alone in the office, the case line informs Carter of the location of the mysterious Zodiac. She is able to retrieve the Zodiac serum single-handedly. The next day, Agent John Flynn reprimands Carter for not going through the proper procedures to complete the mission. Carter explains that the mission was time-sensitive, but Flynn is unmoved, dismissing the indignant Carter as an "old flame" of Captain America's who was given her current job out of pity for her bereavement. The case line rings again, this time with Howard Stark on the other end, who tells Flynn to inform Carter that she will co-head the newly created S.H.I.E.L.D. In a mid-credit scene, Dum Dum Dugan is seen poolside with Stark, marveling at two women wearing the newly created bikinis.

Agent Carter, released on the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray release on September 24, 2013, as well as part of the digital download release on September 3, 2013,[22] was seen as a bridge between that film and the then-upcoming Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Marvel had considered adding it to previous home media releases as well.[5] Hayley Atwell reprises her role as Peggy Carter,[22] along with Dominic Cooper and Neal McDonough reprising their respective roles as Howard Stark and Timothy "Dum Dum" Dugan. Chris Evans appears as Steve Rogers / Captain America via archive footage. The short introduces Bradley Whitford as Agent John Flynn and Iron Man 3 director Shane Black as the Disembodied Voice.[23][24] It was directed by Louis D'Esposito and written by Eric Pearson.[15] The short was filmed over five days,[21] and reused visual effects shots of 1940s New York from Captain America: The First Avenger to save money.[5] Christopher Lennertz returned from Item 47 to compose music for the short, and went on to compose the score for the MCU television series Agent Carter, which was partially inspired by the short.[20][7]

In May 2013, DMG Entertainment said they were considering creating a short film, tentatively titled The Prologue, centered on Wang Xueqi's Dr. Wu from Iron Man 3, who only appeared in 10 seconds of the film outside of China; Xueqi appeared in three minutes of the Chinese release of the film. The Prologue would be composed of sequences shot during the production of Iron Man 3 and would explore Wu before the events of Iron Man. DMG added that they were unsure of how they would release the short, saying rumors claiming The Prologue could possibly release on television or a future MCU home media release were "speculation".[47]

Phil Coulson walks into a restaurant where Jasper Sitwell is eating breakfast, and informs him that the World Security Council wishes Emil Blonsky released from prison to join the Avengers Initiative. They see him as a "war hero" and blame his fight in New York City with Bruce Banner on Banner himself. They order S.H.I.E.L.D. to send an agent and negotiate Blonsky's release from the custody with Thaddeus Ross. The two agents decide to send a patsy to sabotage the meeting, so Ross will refuse to release Blonsky. At Sitwell's urging, Coulson reluctantly sends the consultant: Tony Stark.

We've known for some time that Marvel is planning live-action short films, which would presumably be used to test the appeal of their more obscure superhero properties (Black Panther, Dr. Strange, Heroes for Hire, etc.). However, at Comic-Con 2011 we learned that some of the first "one-shot" shorts would be used to serve another purpose: fill in gaps of The Avengers saga.

Marvel's first one-shot short is called "The Consultant" and stars Clark Gregg as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Coulson - the errand boy of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) - who has shown up time and again in an effort to recruit superheroes for "The Avengers Initiative." Marvel has released a preview of "The Consultant", which will be featured on the Thor Blu-ray this fall.

To us it's pretty clear that this conversation between Coulson and (presumably) another S.H.I.E.L.D. agent takes place in the time period of Iron Man 2/Incredible Hulk. The "consultant" would refer to Tony Stark's status as a consultant on The Avengers Initiative (which was established at the end of IM2), and the mission to annoy General "Thunderbolt" Ross would refer to the conversation that takes place between Ross and Stark at the end of Incredible Hulk.

There is already word on the next one-shot short, entitled "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer." It will reportedly detail an incident that occurred between Iron Man 2 and Thor, as Agent Coulson was en-route from Tony Stark's mansion to the New Mexico desert to lock down the crash site of Thor's hammer, Mjolnir. Should be fun.

While these first one-shots aren't as exciting as, say, a short introducing Doctor Strange, it's still good to see the Avengers saga being expanded, and all the little gaps being filled. We know that Joss Whedon's Avengers movie will likely hit the ground running and blow the borders of the Marvel movie universe wide open, so using these shorts to drop little clues and foreshadows that will better explain the big showdown is a good strategy in our book.

Agents Phil Coulson and Jasper Sitwell discuss who to send as a patsy to sabotage the release of Emil Blonsky into S.H.I.E.L.D. custody for the Avengers Initiative. Their only option is to send in the consultant.

Agent Coulson walks into a restaurant where Agent Sitwell is eating breakfast, and informs him that the World Security Council wishes Emil Blonsky released from prison to join the Avengers Initiative. As they see him as a "war hero", and blame his fight in New York City with Bruce Banner on Banner himself. They order S.H.I.E.L.D. to send an agent to ask General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross to release Blonsky into their custody. The two agents decide to send a patsy to sabotage the meeting, so Ross will refuse to release Blonsky. At Sitwell's urging, Coulson reluctantly sends the consultant; Tony Stark. As partially depicted in the post-credits scene of The Incredible Hulk, a disgraced Ross sits drinking in a bar, when he is approached by Stark, who ends up annoying Ross so much that Ross tries to have him removed from the bar. In reply, Stark buys the bar, and schedules it for demolition. The next day at the restaurant, Sitwell arrives to Coulson eating breakfast. Coulson informs him that their plan worked, and that Blonsky will remain in prison.

As highlighted by that A-Force shot in Avengers: Endgame, the MCU has heavily invested in strong female characters moving forward. While Natasha Romanoff and Wanda Maximoff have led the charge on this front, credit should be given to the MCU's first full-fledged narrative of female empowerment: the story of Peggy Carter.

X-MEN, FANTASTIC FOUROn this week's Word Balloon podcast, Mark Millar spoke about his role as creative consultant on Fox's Marvel properties including the Fantastic Four and X-Men. Thanks to Comic Book Movie for the transcript.

It's no surprise, either, said Rob Salkowitz, a consultant and author of "Comic-Con and the Business of Pop Culture." Comics have been a foundation of entertainment for decades, but since the 1990s, the advent of better technology in film and TV has seen what was once a staple of four-color comics transform into visual spectacles.

While most people were relieved to be able to get their shots so soon, a significant section of society went the opposite way and refused to get vaccinated. Some were simply hesitant because they lacked information. A good portion of that group has come around by now. But in the end, the refusal camp was strong enough to hamstring the U.S. vaccination effort, which left us more vulnerable to Delta-driven COVID surges in the summer and fall of 2021, as well as the Omicron variant that showed up toward the end of the year.
