Any opinions on CALLSIGN UPDATE ENABLE default ???

It has been suggested to default CALLSIGN UPDATE ENABLE to FALSE from present TRUE.

For established users, TR4W.INI should already reflect your preference.

For new users, this means TR4W will default to NOT updating callsign from exchange window but WILL allow for exchange entries that appear to TR4W to be callsign corrections

So do you want to leave it as-is or change default to FALSE  ???

I would leave it on. For any contests where it conflicts, perhaps the default can be off.

Hi Howie -

This command can not be used if there is domestics with letters in the exchange.
According to the experience of making configs for modules for various contests,
I know that there are more such contests than with the exchange of type 599+#
or 599+zone, 599+age etc w/o letters.
Therefore, I vote for FALSE. ;-)
I think that the user should install the TRUE if necessary.

CALLSIGN UPDATE ENABLE true was the default in TRLog and, for a long time, in TR4W. Being able to update the callsign in the exchange field is a very useful feature. By not making it true by default, new users (do we get any?) would never know about this useful feature of TR4W. I may have inadvertently stirred up this issue when TR4W didn't update the callsign in this year's running of ARRL Field Day. I told Dick AD7AF that he could put the updated callsign in the exchange field and, low and behold, it didn't work. Vast embarrassment, etc.

Perhaps a middle ground might be to refuse callsign update, thus defaulting to VHF contest/6-digit grid square, when such is presented. Or, perhaps the setup for contests where it is an issue could explicitly force CALLSIGN UPDATE ENABLE to false for the duration.

Documentation:  While I have defaulted so far on documentation due to summer work on my property and station, I will be working on documentation over the winter season. I will be putting in to the Users Guide some words pointing out CALLSIGN UPDATE and its possibilities with a warning about the other consequences.

CALLSIGN UPDATE ENABLE
Values: TRUE or FALSE
Default: FALSE

When this parameter is set to TRUE, TR-LOG will parse the Exchange Win-
dow looking for callsigns; if it finds one, the program will act exactly as if the
call had been changed in the Call Window. You must type in the complete
call, and spaces must both precede and follow it.
If this parameter is TRUE, ctrl-U will send the call in the Exchange Win-
dow (otherwise it sends the call in the Call Window).

Update call of record. TR-LOG maintains an internal variable with the
name CallsignICameBackTo, which represents the program’s notion
of the call that you are working. Normally, this variable is updated
automatically when you send the alt-F10 message (which defaults to
Is your call xxxx?, where xxxx is the contents of the Call Window.
When a ctrl-U is found in a message and
CALLSIGN UPDATE ENABLE is FALSE, the call in the Call Window
becomes the call of record for the QSO and will be used at the time
that the QSO is logged to determine whether the CALL OK NOW MESSAGE
needs to be sent.
If instead CALLSIGN UPDATE ENABLE is TRUE, ctrl-U will use
the call in the Exchange Window as the call of record instead of the
call in the Call Window.

But CTRL+U is not entered in the list of active commands and does not work till now.
I think that if no one has asked about the absence of this command CTRL+U in recent years.
So, it is not needed.

Well we have a 2 - 2 tie on this issue.

I am going to change CallSignUpdateEnable to default to FALSE.

The reasons the default will change (in 4.64 release) are twofold:

1)  Consistency with TRLOG

2) For newbies, it is easier to understand why CallSign Update is not working than to figure out why long exchanges (may) not work.

This should not impact users who already have this set in their tr4w.ini

note: for users who have not encountered this problem, the tip-off is that you enter the exchange (say KP03QA) and the CALLSIGN changes

to the exchange.
