Artist Associates: Beyond the Commission

Saturday 16 July 2011, 10.30am – 4pm (10.00am Registration and Coffee)
The Gallery, the Arts University College at Bournemouth

£30 / £20 concessions

Artist Associates: Beyond the Commission is a one-day symposium that focuses on the practice of supporting artists within the contemporary visual arts beyond the traditional curatorial, exhibition and commissioning role of the public sector, including mentoring, advice, advocacy, and training. Should this duplicate or complement, for instance, commercial representation? Should this be limited in reach or accessible? What is the impact on audiences and organisations?

As publicly funded arts organisations begin to develop these new models and initiatives for ongoing support, this one-day symposium presents an introduction to existing programmes and models, modes of representation and questions how long-term support of artists can be increased. A series of afternoon workshops will offer a range of scenarios to test and discuss options.

Confirmed Speakers:

Simon Faithfull, Artist and ArtSway Associate; Alistair Gentry, Artist and Writer, Market Project; Dany Louise, Strategic Arts Faciliator and Writer; Donna Lynas, Director, Wysing Arts Centre; Dida Tait, Head of Membership & Market Development, Contemporary Art Society. Chaired by Mark Segal, Director, ArtSway.

ArtSway Associates Programme
Since September 2008, the ArtSway Associates programme has complemented ArtSway’s exhibition residency and commissioning programme, and has aimed to provide legacy support for a selection of ten artists who have previously undertaken residencies at ArtSway: Anna Best, boredomresearch, Simon Faithfull, Alistair Gentry, Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva, Anne Hardy, Dinu Li, Hannah Maybank, Charlie Murphy, and Emilia Telese.

Over three years, the ArtSway Associates programme has offered each Associate bespoke critical and professional development support, advocacy, training, and seed funding for creative activity. This had included group networking events, group workshops and training sessions, one-on-one meetings with arts professionals, seed funding for particular projects—including Simon Faithfull’s iPhone app. in partnership with Film & Video Umbrella and Alistair Gentry’s Magickal Realism touring project—and digital development—including web content management to cut the cost of updating—and funding towards research and development.

Developed from ArtSway’s Artists, Audiences, Art and Intimacy project, the ArtSway Associates programme has also continued to develop the rapport between ArtSway audiences and its artists. The ArtSway Associates have continued to participate in Portfolio Days, in Crit Groups with local artists, and to lead exhibition tours, deliver gallery talks and hold studio visits for audiences.
