Check the action of the key to that dull note. After hitting the tone
rod, it must drop away very quickly. If it remains in contact, it will
mess u. the sound. If its action is sluggish, check that nothing is
bent, nothing is jammed, nothing is dirty. On my Schoenhut 379M, after a
while some of the keys would not go down far enough. The problem was
that the front board came down very slightly too far, and it is right
over the pivot point. I shimmed up that front board about the thickness
of a business card and it cured it.
But I doubt hhat is your problem.
Another possibility is that that tone rod is no good, and may have
always been that way. Not likely though. Is it loose in the block that
holds it. If it is pushed in too far, it will play sharp and sound bad.
If it is out too far, it will play flat and sound bad. On the Schoenhut
I have, this is impossible as the rods are shrink-fit into the block and
will not move.
Do not try to bend the rods. They will probably break.
