The country began its thorium reactor program in 2011, with the Chinese Academy of Sciences launching the Thorium Molten Salt Reactor Nuclear Energy System Project. This initiative focuses on liquid-fueled designs, which are based on Molten Salt Reactor Experiment research from the 1960s in the U.S. China has successfully developed an experimental 2-megawatt liquid-fueled TMSR, designated TMSR-LF1, located in the Gobi Desert city of Wuwei in Gansu province. This reactor is currently the only operational molten salt reactor in the world actively loaded with and testing thorium fuel... A key achievement was the successful refueling of a working thorium reactor without interruption, as announced by Xu Hongjie, head of the scientific team. This milestone, achieved in April 2025, demonstrates the ability to continuously convert thorium to uranium fuel within the reactor, which experts view as crucial for next-generation nuclear power. Thorium reactors are considered safer than traditional uranium reactors because they operate at lower pressures and have a reduced risk of meltdowns, and they can also produce less long-lived radioactive waste. China plans to build a larger 10-megawatt demonstration reactor, potentially operational by 2030, and aims for 100-megawatt power stations by 2035, intending to use them for various applications, including powering data centers and providing heat for cities.
