Global Poverty and Development
|
We are all aware that there was great
expectation from all quarters for trade reforms. After intense negotiations
lasting over 8 years, the WTO came up, which was welcomed by all. However,
even after all efforts at trade reforms there is large ring of
subsidization by developed countries in certain critical sectors like
Agriculture which is affecting the poverty syndrome all over. There was,
therefore, the great need of looking into the question of subsidy &
finding out its critical linkage with poverty. A serious attempt was,
therefore, made to go into the definition of subsidy, how to discipline
them and make them pursue developmental objectives. Certain specific areas
like cotton subsidy were studied with great care. Attempt has also been
made to look into various prohibited subsidies and different types of
subsidies like input subsidies & output subsidies. Effort has also been
made to look into case studies with consequential results. Relationship
between subsidy & poverty has been studied in great detail with
reference to important issues like import/barriers, export trend domestic
support, welfare efforts and environment.

Right to Education |
| Attainment of education is natural for every one, like receiving
the air or water to sustain one’s life. Education is the birth right
of any individual. The role of Universal Elementary Education (UEE) for
strengthening the social fabric of democracy, through the provision of
equal opportunities to all, has been accepted, since the inception of our
Republic. With the formulation of National Policy of Education (NPE), India
initiated a wide range of programmes for achieving the goal of UEE. Now,
Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) is implemented as India’s main programme
for universalising elementary education. Its overall goals need to be
aligned with legally mandated norms and standards and free entitlements,
mandated by the Right to Education Act. In fact, Right to Education is a
legal right now. This study on Right to Education, is a novel endeavour, in
its own right, as it addresses all issues, concerning education in India.
This book is a valuable asset for all scholars, researchers, educationists,
teachers and students, alike. |

In our society and polity,
Women Empowerment is a significant issue. Women in India now participate in
all activities, such as education, politics, media, art and culture,

half of men and a part and parcel of the society in our country. The status
of women in India has been subject to many a great change over the past few
millennia. From equal status with men in ancient times, through the low
points of the medieval period, to the promotion of equal rights by many
reformers, the history of women in India has been quite eventful. The
Constitution of India guarantees to women, equality, no discrimination by
the State, equality of opportunity equal pay for equal work, etc. In
