In 1963, Bjrn's mother Aina entered his group, The West Bay Singers, into an amateur national talent contest - Plats p scen.
It attracted the attention of Bengt Bernhag and Stig Anderson from the recently-formed record company Polar Music and The West Bay Singers were asked to send them a demo tape. Shortly afterwards The West Bay Singers signed with Polar.
Bengt and Stig were actually interested in a group who sang in Swedish, so they persuaded the group to enter the contest with a Swedish song. According to Bengt and Stig this would be an advantage as most acts at the time sang in English. They also persuaded the group to change their name to The Hootenanny Singers.
This talent contest, arranged by Sveriges Radio, had gone through a couple of semi-finals on the radio before this semi-final, which was the first to be broadcast on TV.
The Hootenanny Singers performed Jag vnter vid min mila. The group and Birgitta Holmner were the acts that were voted to go on from this group of semi-finalists. In two further semi-finals, held in November and December, the other acts for the finals (to be held in January 1964) were to be selected.
The Hootenanny Singers were proclaimed joint winners in the final of Plats p scen in January 1964. Jag vntar vid min mila became their dbut single and the first hit for both the group and for Polar Music.
This programme no longer exists in the SVT archives.

Bjrn with The Hootenanny Singers featured in this film performing Darlin' which was their current single at the time of filming (the single was released in May 1964).
PROMO information from the video release: "What happens if a ordinary housewife takes part in a local beauty contest - and wins? How does it turn out then if her husband forbids her to go further to the final in Palma de Majorca - but she leaves anyway? Then add to that a romance between a Swedish postman and a Japanese beauty contest candidate, a crazy female photographer and a rapid stream of bikini-clad girls, yes then you got a guaranteed success."
"The stars hail down in this Swedish classic, here for the first time released on video. What about: Anna Sundqvist, Arne Kllerud, Pekka Langer, Hagge Geigert, Ove Tjernberg and more ... Besides that The Hootenanny Singers, The Spotnicks and other famous Swedish 60s orchestras takes part. Kge Gimtell directed."
The film premired on 2 September 1964.

Filmed: September-October 1964Location: Barcelona, SpainBroadcast: LIVE (during programa de sobremesa), October 1964, RTVE, Spain
Release status: Unreleased
Shown in: Spain
Notes:From the end of September until mid-October 1964 The Hootenanny Singers spent two weeks in Spain on holiday, at which time they also appeared on a television programme.
Among the numbers performed was La Mamma which was co-written by French singer Charles Aznavour.
It was broadcast in live "during the siesta sometime in the afternoon 13:00-16:00 in the period called (in that time) on RTVE programa de sobremesa.
When Archivo RTVE were asked about whether this programme exists in their achives they said, "We do not have information on this performance in our databases. It may not have been preserved. We are sorry."
Looking through the Spanish TV guide day-by-day from 25 September to 23 November 1964, their name was not listed separately. Possible program titles which may have contained their songs are Discorama, Telediario, and we suspect that as it was a live broadcast, it was not saved by RTVE.

Filmed: early May 1966Location: YLE Studio, Helsinki, FinlandBroadcast: Thursday 19 May 1966, YLE1, Finland
Release status: This programme has not been included on any officially released video or DVD
Duration: 40 mins
Shown in: Finland
Notes:Ohimennen - nuorten nonstop = By the way - young nonstop Ohimennen was the most popular series in Finland, run on YLE in 1965-66, approximately every 2 weeks. It consisted not just studio performances, but interviews with the stars, so it's not impossible that The Hep Stars also gave an interview.
Season 1, Episode 19
Director: Jarmo Porola
Writer: Markku Veijalainen
Stars: Anki Lindquist Danny Antti Hammarberg (as Irwin Goodman) Tapani Karhu Harry Snell Finn-Trio (as The Finn Trio) The Hep Stars The YLE archive confirmed that this episode was not saved and is not available any more but, thankfully, the last Ohimennen episode - a kind of overview of that year - was saved and was aired on 21 December 1966 and showed a 17-second long segment of this performance. So it now confirmed: The Hep Stars performed in playback Sunny Girl in the studio. (Their brand new single was released on 15 March 1966).
Behind them in the background you can see some huge letters wich are part of the studio stage set which spelled the name of the show (ie. OHIMENNEN). YLE produced in total only 20 episodes in 1966, so this Hep Stars song must have been quite successfull to have been included in the review programme.

Filmed: Early May 1966?Location: Cirkus, Stockholm, SwedenBroadcast: Sunday 8 May 1966, SVT, Sweden
Release status: This programme has not been included on any officially released video or DVD
Duration: About 16 minutes for the performance and the mini-opera
Shown in: Sweden
Notes:nskeprogrammet 90 1950 = Wishful Programme 90 1950
The Hep Stars performed Wedding. Svenne Hedlund appears to be off his crutches this time but is perching on a chair instead. Perhaps it's not long after the accident that put him on crutches in the first place.
The "90 1950" in the title refers to the postal giro number for Radiohjlpen (Radio Aid), which is the charity organisation for Sveriges Radio and Sveriges Television. Their postal giro number is 90 1950-6. So nskeprogrammet was simply an intermittent charity gala, although not sure if each gala had a specific purpose.
The Hep Stars could also be seen taking part in a mini-opera (Bizet's Carmen) with Swedish singing superstar Siw Malmkvist. They hang around the back of the stage in period costumes and appear to join in chorus and retorts, flitting from taking it seriously to looking rather embarrassed! Benny's arrival for this 'skit' has him pushing firstly a lady and then a guard out of the way.

Filmed: May 1966Location: SwedenBroadcast: May 1966, Sweden, SVT
Release status: Unreleased
Duration: c. 15 mins
Shown in: Sweden
Notes:The early Hep Stars were not overly expert players, but they were enthusiastic performers. Hep Stars On Stage is a highly vigorous live album recorded on the Swedish folk park circuit in the August of 1965 and released in November 1965.
Most of the material played here are covers - a limitation which would drive Benny to write material for the group. Benny mainly plays electric organ here. The finale of Whole lot-ta shak-in' goin' on is perhaps the best of of the tracks - it features excited if not overly-expert playing on this track with emphasis on Christer Pettersson's drums and lots of electric organ.
The group performed some of their hits for this show: 2 from this LP and 2 from the latest singles: Wedding No response Sunny girl Whole lot-ta shak-in' goin' on As the Sunny Girl single was released on 15 March 1966 and the Wedding single was released in May 1966 and the programme contains these songs, it can be suspected that this show was filmed around May 1966.
Watch for: Benny making the sign of the cross very quickly during Wedding.Benny leaping from the top of a speaker during Whole lot-ta shak-in' goin' on!

Filmed: between Sunday 4 - Friday 9 December 1966Location: West GermanyBroadcast: Monday 26 December 1966, West Germany
Release status: Unreleased
Shown in: West Germany
Notes:The Hep Stars left for West Germany either late in the evening on Sunday 4 December or maybe sometime on Monday 5 December 1966.
They spent four days in West Germany for the purpose of doing TV. But the taping of Sunny Girl only took an hour. The rest of the time The Hep Stars did nothing else than sleep, eat sausages, etc. It is unclear if this means that they only appeared on one TV show, and if they only performed Sunny Girl on that one show.
According to Swedish press reports, The Hep Stars appeared on West German TV on Monday 26 December 1966. Presumably, this was the broadcast of Sunny Girl and whatever else they may have done earlier in December.

Filmed: Thursday 15 December 1966Location: Isstadion, Stockholm
Release status: Unreleased
Shown in: Sweden (perhaps also elsewhere)
Notes:In late 1966 (and maybe early 1967) The Hep Stars made PROMO clips for some of the songs from their brand new album, The Hep Stars. The clips were referred to as "cineteque films" at the time.
On Thursday 15 December 1966, they filmed skating scenes at Isstadion (where ABBA performed live in 1979), but it's unknown to which song.
It could be that the clip of The Birds In The Sky from the Norwegian programme Ten-Pluggen is one of those "cineteque films", and they also did one for Sound Of Eve. They apparently did at least one more song as well.
The man behind the films was ke Borglund, the same guy who went on to direct the ill-fated Habari Safari movie. According to contemporary reports, there was a thought that the B&W "cineteque films" would be featured in the movie, interspersed with the colour footage filmed in Africa.
