Destination North of Haïti/ Champêtre Fiesta/ Fêtes Champêtres

By Jean Hervé Charles

Come and enjoy the most cultural event in the Western Hemisphere the Champêtre Fiesta or Fêtes Champêtres in the Northern part of Haiti which is safe and secure miles away from the chaos of the capital. It is easily reached by Spirits Airline with a short flight from Fort Lauderdale to Cap Haitian.

It is a medieval pilgrim to the Saints or to the Loa, it is dance, it is music, it is Creole food it is as Barbara Ehrenreich put it a communal ambiance that calm the soul to make you invigorated to affront life when you return back home with memories that make you live happily until you return the next year for another dose of spiritual renewal. It is a collective joy that revels of feasting and dancing with origin from the ancient Greeks to medieval Christianity to Haiti actual fetes champetres.

The communal pilgrim starts in the bucolic village of Les Borgne’s on July 18th for the Diaspora fiesta. It is dance to the Orchestra Tropicana for the natives and the Diaspora. They change the date of the fiesta of the town to put it on the 18th of July to profit of the crowd that follows the pilgrim season.

On July 19th and July 20 the pilgrims will travel to Port Margot the adjoining town for the fiesta of St Marguerite. There you will be entertained with brulé boi, a cultural event sanctioned by the Catholic Church following the night mass of the fiesta. Tropicana and Septentrional the two best dancing orchestra will compete for the largest crowd, Advantage Tropicana.

From there, a few resting time in Cape Haitian to embark in a long stretch of pilgrimage to La Plaine du Nord on July 23 and July 24. A major fiesta in honor of St Jacques, akin to Comtapelle of Spain, this Fiesta is popular with national and with the Diaspora. People come from all over Haiti to plunge in the mud of St Jacques, and display their magnificent voodoo dresses in a defilé that should be televised for the whole world to see. Tropicana and Septentrional orchestra will continue their competition for the largest crowd with food gala all over.

Leaving La Plaine du Nord without rest, you head to Grand St Anne at Limonade for the fiesta of St Anne. It is also a grandiose celebration drawing people from all over the country.  Tropicana and Septentrional will continue their competition, the merchants will offer their crafts, baskets from Grande Riviere and chairs from Bahon.

A few day of rest, in Cape Haitian you will hop in the mountain to arrive in Marmelade for the fiesta of St Mary Magdelana on July 29th. In the cool and bucolic town of Marmelade, you will admire and buy the magnificent and colorful display of furniture in bamboo designed by the artists from that town.

Be prepared to be in the mountain village of St Suzanne for their fiesta on August 10 and 11. Profit to visit the archeological imprint of the Indians the first inhabitants of Ayiti as they called the land of mountains. While at the same time plunge into the voodoo atmosphere of St Philomena in Bord de Mer Limonade where the saint is not sanctioned by the Catholic Church but popular amongst the devotees for its many miracles.

From now, the fiesta moves to Cap Haitian for the feast of Tropicana, with its concert on the plaza near the Cathedral, the fiesta of Cape Haitian on the 15th of August and the gala ball in the home of Tropicana.

The Saint Pilgrim will move to the town of Quartier Morin on the 25th of August with all the food and dance that now you are used to. Rest a bit and move to Grande Riviere for the feast of St Rose de Lima on July 29 and July 30th. St Rose has a strong devotee at home and abroad. She is the saint who helps women get a husband or a child. And Grande Riviere with its pleasant atmosphere will charm you while dancing to the music of Tropicana and Septentrional.
