Thesynthetic trio of bug spray, plasticity, and waxiness lasts for hours on my skin, albeit at various degrees of strength, but it is not the only unpleasant part of the opening. It is accompanied by waves of thin, sheer jasmine that is laced with a slightly smoky, scratchy, synthetic leather note and a faint gasp of equally synthetic, wholly thin civet. The entire bouquet is then lightly splattered with tiny dribbles of caramel sweetness from the ambergris (which also feels synthetic), and then cocooned within a heavy, unbalanced cloud of pepperiness.
nice review kafka.. for your information this is my 2nd purchase of opus9.. but for hot weather not last as your country may be a cold enviroment. i lov it but need to double spray to boost the projection.
What a wonderful interview! I never knew the meaning of the word Amouage befiore, but it's perfect!
Re: Your title, is an homage(see what I did there?) to cinema, in particular a certain film about music.
My favorite Amouage is Ubar, although Gold is very close to my heart as well. Ubar is so exotic and singular, there is nothing else like it.
I didn't know much about Amouage or CC to begin with, but I didn't realize Amouage came from an Arabic word. I own a split of Lyric, but no bottles yet! My first may be Ubar, though I haven't tried a lot of Amouage scents.
Very nice interview, M!
I am very surprised that Chong says he doesn't really smell fragrances by other brands. That's very interesting.
I have a very special place in my heart for Jubilation XXV, though I love several of the Amouage scents overseen by Chong. I've only tried one Opus; I'd love to try the rest. Oh, and I'm a monkey.
Congratulations on the interview!
Many interesting things to comment. I loved the way perfumers are chosen to create a new Amouage fragrance. They don't pay attention to the name of the person behind the perfume. Maybe are they anonymous works? This way they can choose the perfume of an apprentice, and I think this is a great way of giving everybody equal opportunities.
I have never tried any Amouage. I wish I could find them in Spain!
Wonderful interview, as usual, Michelyn. I am very lucky to have discovered Amouage by a passionate saleswoman who has now become a good friend, and with whom I worked at the Galeries Lafayette Haussmann. I tried all the Opus, and my favorite is n4, the spicy one !
I loved learning that the name Amouage means "waves of emotion." How very beautiful! The one Amouage I own is Lyric Woman, a precious decant. I haven't explored the whole line yet, but would absolutely love to.
I don't own any Amouage scents yet but I am head over heels in love with Ubar (I will own a bottle one day!!). Who knew a scent could smell so rich and glamorous?
Christopher certainly is an interesting character, I follow him on Twitter!
didn't know the meaning of the word "amouage" either.
and i must say, the fact that fragrance creators are being named is entirely due to online fragrance communities (such as this), i have no doubt at all.
as for art/s: seems like music to me.
you know?
e.g. beethoven sonata for piano and cello op. 69 (happens to be one of my favorite cello pieces.)
Wonderful interview, Michelyn, and pictures (love the Kandinsky!). I have only sampled a few Amouages, so I would love to win that set! My favorites, so far, are Lyric Woman and Jubilation XXV. I'm a Wood Horse.
Amouage 25 for Women is my ultimate Holy Grail perfume. There is nothing better even though it is not the only Amouage I own: I am a proud owner of Dia (swoontastic), Ubar (sultryscious), Gold (luuuuv)as well. And I am a Rabbit according to the Chinese calendar. The new year is supposed to be that of a Rabbit so please enter me and let me win. Yes!
Oh and I forgot to add that I think that Mr. Chong has already started exploring Japan through his creations: I am a big fan of Japanese culture and aesthetics and Memoir Man and Woman do envelop you in a Japanesque mood..
Franky the thing I have learned most about Christopher Chong is how open he is in replying the questions, his intimate love for art that is not stopped in perfumes but as a whole, where music , cinema make the art conception in the shape or a perfume.
I love the name Amouage, I learned it when I was in the M.East.
Sadly I don't own now any Amouage perfume and my chinese sign is Tiger.
My favorite is Memoir Woman. It is classic and modern, feminine and sensuous. I feel fabulous when I wear it.
Very interesting story behind this fragrance as well. I would have never guessed that.
I did not know a lot about Amouage, so almost everything I read was new to me!
I only tried Gold and Memoir Woman, so I would love to try the Opus Collection. I love the library concept behind it.
I love finding out when others are both tea AND coffee lovers. Way too many people miss out by thinking they have to commit to just one warm beverage of choice. Although I do recommend forging into the world of black tea and leaving that watery green stuff behind. ?
New and intriguing about Christopher Chong: that he trained as an operatic lyric baritone, that he doesn't smell perfumes from other houses, and that Michelle Kwan is one of his favourite artists. Most fun fact: his download of Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down).
I'm interested in his reflection that we will see new perfumers come out of China. I think that will be a fascinating influence in the world of perfume. My sign is Water Snake which is compatible with Rooster. A good chance I would really appreciate the Opus scents brought to us with the high standards of the Earth Rooster.
Thanks for the interesting interview and the draw opportunity.
Another wonderful interview, Michelyn! My favorite Amouage is the spicy dark rose Lyric Woman, which I own and wear often. I also love Epic Woman, which seems to be a continuation of the same narrative thread as Lyric, but even darker and deeper. I love Christopher Chong's concept of a library of scents. That is pretty much how I see my own collection.
Cool ?
I didn't know about the origin of Amouage name. I have to admit that I love the brand more and more. Every new perfume is a surprise, and a positive one.
Very interesting interview. Thanks!
I've got mine Opus Library discovery kit today and I'm very excited and can hardly wait to try them all. Last year I tested only Opus III and liked it very much. Now I get a chance to enjoy all four of them.
Thank you for that opportunity!
Why is Amouage sold in Walmart? ! I travel to Oman frequently and always make sure I purchase at least 2-3 bottles each time! I have quite a selection of Amouage! I also pride myself in gifting it to friends and family and brag about its reputation, exclusivity and cost It is quite discouraging to know that it is sold for a quarter of the price at Walmart!
