You will eventually come across the lone surviving lighthouse keeper, Mikkjal. After talking to Mikkjal he will give you a lighthouse key. Head outside and go investigate the lighthouse, you will encounter more wraiths along the way.
You can head back at this point, or investigate the lighthouse further. If you decide to investigate the lighthouse, you will find a letter that shows the lighthouse keeper is the cause for the curse.
Lucid, also known as the Dream Master and the Keeper of Nightmares, is a former Commander of the Black Mage with the power to manipulate dreams. Lucid created the illusion of a ruined Maple World within the Gate to the Future, and was also responsible for creating Lachelein in the Arcane River.
Later that night, Lucid began practicing her archery skills, though she grew frustrated when she was unable to shoot properly. Wishing that she were gifted like Athena, Lucid began growing tired and fell asleep. In her dreams, she found herself hitting every target perfectly, with Mercedes acknowledging her skills.
Though she knew that she had only been dreaming, she also felt that everything had been too real to be an ordinary dream. She then realized that she herself had woven the dream, and that she had been in complete control of everything. She proudly noted that though archery was a skill that anyone could learn, the ability to control dreams was something that she alone possessed.
The next morning, Lucid presented a beautiful music box to Mercedes, which she claimed would give sweet dreams to the listener. As the other elves gathered to listen to the music, Mercedes was impressed by Lucid's creation and told her that it may just become Elluel's greatest treasure. However, Lucid was frustrated upon seeing everyone else enjoying the music, as she had intended for it to be a gift only for Mercedes. As she had been hoping for an even bigger reaction from Mercedes, she decided that she would create something even more spectacular and perfect, as she wanted it to be something exclusive between herself and Mercedes.
Oblivious to the passage of time, Lucid was unaware of the Heroes finally sealing the Black Mage away, as well as his final curse upon them. With the destiny of the elves being tied to Mercedes, all the elves were frozen in ice, including Lucid. Because of her abilities, Lucid's mind remained awake, and her dream world quickly became a prison. Though she attempted to weave happy dreams for herself, such as ruling the elves as their queen, she remained aware that it was merely an illusion. Crafting one dream after another, Lucid soon began wishing that she wouldn't wake up again.
With half the world being driven mad from insomnia, the Alliance launched a campaign to both investigate the source of the dreams, as well as to find a cure to the nightmares. The traveler who first investigated the Gate to the Future was able to gather Lucid Matter from the illusion, which Grendel the Really Old used to lift the nightmare in people's minds.
Some time after the formation of the Alliance, Lucid returned to Elluel and used her powers to influence the dreams of the elves, who were all still frozen from the Black Mage's curse. Having trapped all the elves in her nightmare, Lucid created an illusion of Elluel to replace the real one, in which all the elves were free and well. In this illusion, Lucid took the form of Mercedes and ruled the kingdom as the queen.
Soon after the completion of Lachelein, Lucid celebrated in her room with a glass of wine. Suddenly, however, she felt a wave of drowsiness, causing her to collapse and fall unconscious. Inside her dreamscape, Lucid sensed that something was wrong and decided to leave. Suddenly, several Wightmares appeared and amusedly asked where she was going, laughing that they were the ones who had called her.
Suddenly, she awoke back in Lachelein, feeling chills running down her spine. After realizing that she had lost control of her own dream, she suddenly began laughing maniacally and invited her nightmares to swallow her whole, though she entreated them to follow her obediently until she could successfully change the Black Mage's mind. She then added that until the whole world was shrouded in sweet dreams, the festival needed to go on.
This projection of Mercedes came to life in Lachelein in the form of a man named Protective Mask, who wore a plague doctor gas mask. Unlike most citizens of Lachelein, Protective Mask was created from magic, not Erda, and he was also aware that Lachelein was an illusion. He soon began gathering other 'awakened ones' - Erda beings who had awoken from Lucid's dream. Lucid soon came to believe that part of her nightmares had manifested into her dream, causing her to send her Dreamkeepers - minions designed to maintain the dream of Lachelein - in order to find the nightmare.
Soon after, the Adversary arrived in Lachelein while on their mission to stop the Black Mage. Soon after, Protective Mask discovered the mand learned that they were from the outside world. Suddenly, two Dreamkeepers appeared out of nowhere and dragged the Adversary away. They brought the Adversary before Lucid and put them in line behind another citizen, whom Lucid transformed into a butterfly with a snap of her fingers.
She then greeted the Adversary and welcomed them to Lachelein, the city of dreams and illusions, where there was no sadness or pain. She then snapped her fingers to transform the Adversary into a butterfly, but she was surprised when nothing happened, causing her to realize that they were the honored guest whom she had been awaiting.[3][4] Just then, Protective Mask arrived and created a distraction to help the Adversary escape. As punishment for allowing them to get away, Lucid transformed the Dreamkeepers into butterflies.
As the Adversary continued working to destabilize the dream, a Dreamkeeper arrived to report what was happening to Lucid, though he was quickly transformed into a butterfly for failing to stop them. Lucid wondered whether the Adversary was the one chosen by the Black Mage, or if they had come for her. However, she believed that it changed nothing and invited them to continue clinging onto their false hope.
With her dream slowly starting to unravel, Lucid decided to take drastic measures and sent her butterflies across Lachelein, transforming all the populace into Dreamkeepers. Lucid hoped to expand Lachelein to consume the entire world. With their allies being turned into Dreamkeepers, Protective Mask pushed himself and the Adversary into the Arcane River in order to escape.
The Adversary was taken aback, as they believed that Lucid was a loyal Commander. They asked what the Black Mage was planning, but Lucid merely told them that they couldn't begin to comprehend his plans. She then sent several butterflies at them, but Protective Mask arrived to warn that Lucid's dreams were carried on the dust from the butterflies. However, Lucid told them that it was too late and dragged the Adversary into her dream world.
Protective Mask then entered Lucid's dreams, where she was drowning in a dark ocean, and took off his mask, revealing Mercedes' face underneath. Protective Mask pulled Lucid out of her dark abyss and told the others that she would remain unconscious for a while longer, after which he would hand her over to the Alliance soldiers in the town square.[9]
After the mission to find Grendel, Neinheart met with Mercedes in Lachelein and attempted to take custody of Lucid. However, Mercedes refused to hand Lucid over to the Alliance, believing that it was her duty as a queen and a friend to take care of Lucid. Though Neinheart and Mercedes quarreled over the decision, Cygnus sent word with an Alliance soldier that she had granted Mercedes custody over Lucid until she awoke. Mercedes then took Lucid back to Elluel, breathing a sigh of relief that Lucid was finally going home, noting that it must have been such a long nightmare for her. She then hoped that there would be nothing but happy dreams for Lucid from now on.
Sunny had been aiming to achieve his freedom which had his real goal all along. However, he found himself bound to more people, places, and things than ever before. He was bound by his own desires. This realization led him to question the power of the Demon of Desire, which had been one of the most powerful among the daemons, except for Weaver. He considered whether being bound to people, ideas, and values was a good thing, as he had chosen these bonds himself. Despite this, a small part of Sunny rebelled against this, wanting to be free and unrestrained. He had to finish his mission, which was to evacuate the citizens of Antarctica, and then explore other options. Despite his distant dreams, Sunny remained calm and determined, possibly recognizing his true conviction.[86]
The story begins ("Introduction") with Richard, new manager of the Paris Opera House (previously president of Northern Railways and a member of the Stock Exchange Choir), greeted by the artists and staff ("Welcome Sir, I'm So Delighted"). The previous managers of the Paris Opera did not last very long, due to problems with the legend of the Opera Ghost, who demands 20,000 francs a month and his own private box. These requests are defied by the adamant and foolish Richard, little knowing the mayhem that will take place if he refuses to accept the Ghost's demands. Madame Giry, the box keeper, warns Richard that he may have upset the "Ghost". She is horrified when Richard demands use of Box Five (the Ghost's box). She knows the "Ghost" won't stand idly by while Richard refuses to accept his demands. She warns Richard to expect a run of horrific events.
In 2023, a brief introduction cutscene prior to the tutorial revealed that the entire game takes place inside of the student avatar's dreams. The student, who in their story is a child in elementary school, accidentally tripped one day after school and broke a model village they presented to their class on the same day. The child goes to bed that night wishing on a shooting star, and they fall asleep only to begin dreaming of repairing their model village as though they were the village's custodian.
