The World Tourism Day theme this year has provided another opportunity
to examine the relationship between tourism and biodiversity.
Biodiversity is after all such a mainstay of modern tourism.
A joint press release (4 April 2009), between the UNWTO and the
Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) states that ‘because tourism
and biodiversity are natural allies, the sustainable planning and
management of tourism can play a critical role in the conservation of
biodiversity.’
Is it tourism preserving biodiversity, as it is claimed, or is it more
a case of biodiversity preserving tourism?
