ECOT is proud to announce the release of a new book, published in
cooperation with EED Tourism Watch: ‘Disaster Prevention in Tourism –
Perspectives on Climate Justice’, edited by Caesar D’Mello, Jonathan
McKeown and Sabine Minninger.

The catalyst for this book was the tsunami of 26 December 2004, when
more than 200,000 lost their lives as the massive waves damaged and
even wiped out shore-based communities.

With the support of EED (Church Development Service), Germany, a fact
finding initiative in the aftermath of the disaster was implemented by
ECOT. It discovered that the rebuilding of tourism facilities was
being undertaken as a priority so that tourist activity could commence
without delay but at the expense of the local coastal communities.
With its partners in Thailand, Sri Lanka and Indonesia, ECOT planned a
response to the situation, focusing on disaster preparedness and
prevention management (DPPM programme), and advocacy on the impact of
tourism.

This book is one of the outcomes of the DPPM programme, it seeks to
raise awareness about the existing issues related to tourism and
disaster, and by extension to climate change and climate justice, such
as the need for effective methods of child protection in tourism, for
mechanisms of social security, labour standards, land rights and fair
and just resource management related to tourism activities.

In the end only sustainable tourism based on democratic and
participative principles considering social, environmental and
economic standards will be able to meet the challenge of climate
change. Respecting these standards is the basis for disaster
prevention in tourism. This book enables authors from all over the
world with different approaches and perspectives to broaden the debate
around disaster prevention in tourism. Although their arguments vary,
they clearly underline the need for sustainable tourism.

It is our hope that this book will be of serious interest to relevant
people in government and the tourism sector, to personnel in aid and
development agencies, to planners in other relevant spheres, and to
the informed reader concerned about the impact of climate change.
