Hi there,

I recently managed to purchase a second hand keyboard (Komplete Kontrol S49 MKi) with touchkeys installed but I'm having difficulty getting it up and running on my PC.

I've installed the touchkeys software, ST COM port driver driver and loopmidi. I've set a port in loopmidi (not that I really no what I'm doing).

I'm not getting the device to be recognised in the touchkeys software.

Can anyone quickly take me through setup on Windows 10?

Hello John, Prof. Dr. Ozan Yarman from Istanbul here. I own a TouchKeys set that I installed on M-Audio's KeyStation 88es thanks to the ingenuity of Dr. Andrew McPherson. The problem that I encountered while trying to get it recognized by the TouchKeys software was the lack of Amps with the USB port on my Macbook Pro 2008 (https://superuser.com/questions/690074/what-is-the-power-output-of-a-usb-port). I then learned of the issue and had a cable person craft me one of these:

Check the male or female ends for the USB Y-cable so that you can connect your TouchKeys boards to the USB ports of your PC. One of the USB jacks sends I/O, and the other is for extra electrical power for the TouchKeys boards.

Cordially,
Dr. Oz.

Thanks very much for your response.

I bought the keyboard second hand and it came with touchkeys installed. I have been guaranteed that this was working and I have been supplied with the USB cable the previous owner was using to the best of my knowledge (i have emailed to confirm).

I would be really grateful if someone who has experience getting this working on Windows 10 could provide some guidance.

Is there a tutorial on how to set up loopmidi for instance?

Update:

I've installed the driver for the Komplete Kontrol S49 MK1, this is now showing in the TK software, I have selected this as the midi input. I have installed the ST COM port driver.

However, I cannot get the Touchkeys part to connect. It says 'Com1' in device. I click 'start', it then says 'Status: failed to connect'.

Hi John,

Just to double check, do you have both USB cables attached? There is a separate cable for the TouchKeys compared to the S49.

Are you able to find a listing fo connected USB devices in the Windows control panel somewhere? I work on Mac and Linux so I am not exactly sure where you would find this but it should be possible to report this information from the system.

The status of loopmidi won't make any difference to getting the TouchKeys to start properly, so I would focus on the USB cables and the drivers.

Best wishes,
Andrew

Thank you Andrew!

I'd missed the second USB port (the TK one that was hidden away at the end!).

Right, TK software recognising everything, my MPE movement on the keyboard roll is showing. Tomorrow, I will attempt to start playing with it in my DAW, fingers crossed no more hiccups!

I've been really impressed by the speed of the response this evening. Thanks all for the help :)

Yeah I have it all working which is great! Can't wait to have a play tonight, think I'm going to mimic Andrew's Evolution Nylon video  xD.

One quick question though, I think installing the ST COM port driver has knocked out my ethernet... not so good for watching Youtube videos explaining Touchkeys!

I'm not a proper Windows 10 whizz, would anybody know how I get the ethernet back working with Touchkeys?

Hi everyone – Just wanted to mention that I'm still lurking, reading email notifications. I haven't been very active on the group because I haven't been using my TK system due to spending a couple of years moving house and having everything in cases. However, I've been in my new location in Scotland since November now and I'm finally making a studio here in my second bedroom, so I might well be using Touchkeys again in a few weeks' time. Perhaps you'll hear more from me then!

All the best,
Mike

Never had any ethernet problems with that driver, so no idea. It just adds virtual com ports.

Yes I agree with Ink Papers. More chatter from this group would be great!  I am a touch keys owner and very much in love with it… I was wondering if anyone else was taking advantage of the Polyphonic aftertouch using old machines vs plug-ins like Arturie?? I am pretty certain there’s a way to do it using zones and multiple midi channels… I’ve attempted to figure it out with not much luck… I guess I’m still sort of what you’d call a novice when it comes to midi…  Any body practicing this with old machines and if so a tutorial would be great!

I do almost everything in the box to save space, so I don't have much experience with old synths. What old hardware I have that I use is mono. Actually I use the MPE side of Touchkeys pretty rarely, it's mostly for on key modwheel/pitch bend access with mono synths external/internal. I remember hearing about an old synth that actually didn't have poly aftertouch on its keys but could support it via midi, forget what it was, I wonder how often that happened? Otherwise changing a channel AT synth into a poly, well if it was multitimbral, or you assigned each voice to a different midi channel then split the keyboard, you could at least have channel AT for each split.

Regarding ethernet problems, if there was some sort of com port/ethernet conflict I'd try an add on ethernet usb stick, aiming for something different chip/driver-wise than what came with the motherboard if I couldn't fix it with driver updates/software/bios fiddling. I had usb troubles when I started out because my USB ports weren't providing enough power, I tried the special cable which fixes it for some people but not me, what actually fixed it in my case was changing the USB setup in my bios, but that caused other issues. Later on I got a different brand motherboard with different USB drivers, and no longer had any issues at all.
