You might have done this already, but I took a couple trials of raw readings and calculated the distances of each point to one another. The two trials consist of sixteen consecutive readings. The y axis are the distances from point 0 to point 1, point 0 to point 2, point 0 to point 3, etc. and the x axis is the number of the reading.
The attached spreadsheet shows a couple sets of plots (one on each worksheet). The interesting thing to note is that the readings were consecutive/on a curve, which means that each reading is related to the previous reading and implies that the motion of how you slide your card is probably the culprit. The biggest range I saw was 20 pixels.
I don't think there's any way around this reading error, so we may need to get creative on how we handle the data afterwards.
