In the latest Dropbox Update, the developers add 3 spaces in front of their overlays to make sure their ones get shown.

What are your plans to react to it? React and add 4 spaces? Or use 3 spaces and use the number in front like 1TortoiseNormal to get it before Dropbox?

Also, in 2017 we should kill the Overlays for Locked and Readonly, I never need/use them and always kill them (and the dropbox5 - 10 icons) in registry to make sure I fit in the 15 overlay limit.

For me the important ones are shown in the picture.

Just an idea : it might be interesting to have Tortoise detect that
its overlays are not high enough in the list, and show a dialog to the
user with several ways to deal with it:

1. Don't do anything, I don't care about Tortoise overlays.
2. Make tortoise first (by adding as much spaces as necessary), I
don't care about other tools' overlays.
3. Make Dropbox & friends share overlays with tortoise (possible
thanks to the clever design of TortoiseOverlays, see [1] for a reg
file supporting most popular file sharing tools).

It would even be possible to provide a tool to let the user reorganize
the order of the overlays, but that might be overkill.

Hi André,

We use the Locked and Readonly icons, so they should be kept in TortoiseSVN.
If you don't need it, you can unselect them in the settings.

No, that's a race nobody can win.

you can configure the ones you want shown in the settings dialog.
Also, the overlays are set in the overlays component, which is used by
(I think) all Tortoise clients which exist, and even some other SCM
clients as well. So we can't remove those.

unfortunately, TortoiseSVN ignores this setting because it tries to be a "Good Citizen (TM)" (according to the FAQ: https://tortoisesvn.net/faq.html#ovlnotall).

Is it possible to deactivate the "Good Citizen" behaviour?

Thanks!

This morning I noticed that my TortoiseSVN icon overlays disappeared from Windows Explorer. Google-fu pointed me to the Regedit change to move up Tortoise icons in the hierarchy to ensure the TortoiseSVN overlays are in the top 15.

So... now what? I've rebooted my computer. I've reinstalled Tortoise SVN. I've deleted and re-checked-out the files I need.

Still no icon overlays in Windows Explorer.

What gives? Has there been yet another MS update that has borked the universe yet again?

Thanks,

-Dan
