SVN crash opening "Check for modifications" 1.7.3.22386 (Windows 7 64-bit)

 

This morning Tortoise SVN crashed when opening "check for modifications". This is an action I typically perform many times daily, and I have never had a problem with it before. Is there a local fix I can perform, or is this a Tortoise bug?

 

Not sure whether this is relevant, but Firefox upgraded itself to 9.0.1 this morning shortly before this problem occurred.

 

Thanks very much for any insight or workaround you can suggest.

 

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

Open Windows Explorer

Navigate to SVN base directory (C:\branches\)

Right-click release directory (C:\branches\rls630\)

Select "Check for modifications"

 

RESULT:

"Working Copy" popup window opens; after 20 seconds, error popup opens

 

ERROR MESSAGE:

After unstalling and re-installing Tortoise SVN (using TortoiseSVN-1.7.3.22386-x64-svn-1.7.2.msi) the problem with TortoiseProc.exe remains exactly the same as previously reported.

I am experiencing the same problem. Did you make any progress on figuring this out?

In our existing working copies, when I "check for modifications", it crashes. If I create a new checkout of the workspace, I can "check for modifications" with no problems.

Have those existing working copies been upgraded from the old format?
The upgrade process is not perfect, maybe that's the reason.

the only progress I made is learning to use the command-line svn client. it works great. however, I'll try checking out another workspace - sounds like a good workaround.

I tried checking out a new workspace, but it still crashes on "check for modifications". svn status and svn changelist work just fine. the only downside to the command-line tool is that I have to navigate to the target file in explorer before using WinMerge to diff against the head revision (I don't like the command-line diff tool).

We have a working copy that was working with no problems using TortoiseSVN 1.7.1 a few weeks ago. Today, when I start at the root of the working copy and choose "check for modifications", it works. When I then click "check repository", it works for a few moments and then crashes. I tried upgrading to 1.7.4, but got the same results. I noticed the crash reporting is different in 1.7.4 -- i sent along the report using the automated tool.

As far as I know, the upgrade was completed OK. I know it did take some manual effort, but it had been working OK not too long ago. Is there a step we might have missed in the upgrade process?

In one of my test environments, I tried deleting the .svn directory, then re-checked out the code to generate a new working copy. After that, I was no longer able to reproduce the problem. However, I am reluctant to do these same steps in our production and staging environments -- it would be hard to keep track of changes and what's supposed to be where.

Thanks for any ideas you can provide.

Completed does not mean correct. The Upgrade process is not as robust
as it should be. A fresh checkout may fix your problem.

I get the same crashing behavior when I do "Check for Modification" as well.

This occurred right after I updated to the latest version (TortoiseSVN-1.7.5.22551-x64-svn-1.7.3). At first I thought it was just a problem in the latest so I un-installed, rebooted, installed another version (TortoiseSVN-1.7.4.22459-x64-svn-1.7.2), and rebooted. However, I'm still experiencing the same problem. I don't quite recall what version I was using prior to updating to the latest but I've already converted my repositories to the new format and generally I try to keep up to date on the TortoiseSVN releases.

I've also tried doing a cleanup but that didn't help. Like suggested, I tried checking out new copy (tried both one that I had and one that I didn't) but the issue persists.

Have you tried a doing a clean check-out. The earlier versions didn't always convert WCs properly so strange issues could crop up.

I have upgraded to 1.7.4 a few weeks ago. It was working perfectly fine until just a few days after updating the client, it started crashing every time I use 'Check for modifications'. For now, I'm using Commit to check the modified files. Everything else is working just fine...

Yes, the trunk and branches were updated by Tortoise to become compatible with 1.7.4 or later versions successfully.

I'm using Windows 7 x64

IT support at work had the suspicion it's got something to do with my windows profile. We've deleted and rebuilt a new profile and lo and behold, the issue got fixed!

Sadly, it's emerged once again this morning. I've updated to version 1.7.5 but to no avail. Same identical symptoms are occurring (i.e. everything works except for check for modifications).

It's a very frustrating blocker issue so any help is greatly appreciated!

ps. my colleagues are using 1.7.4 and 1.7.5 without any hiccups for months.

I have forgot to mention - I have also downloaded a new checkout using the latest client but the issue still persists.

Just to follow up, I upgraded to the latest (TortoiseSVN-1.7.6.22632-x64-svn-1.7.4) and the crash on "SVN Check for Modifications" is still occurring. I have verified that the downloaded file is authentic and I have rebooted after I updated.

I also submitted a crash report. After the report was submitted and TortoiseSVN restarted, the problem still persists.

best guess: your config file is corrupted.
Remove the folder %appdata%\Subversion
or at least the file
%appdata%\Subversion\config
which makes SVN re-create that file from scratch.

Hi Stefan,

I first renamed the file, %APPDATA%\Subversion\config, to something else and tried to check for modification but it still crashed. Then I renamed the folder, %APPDATA%\Subversion\, and tried again but as usual it crashed. Should I reboot prior to trying again?

I diff the newly created files/folders against my old ones and found only minor differences (everything was in the comments). The only major difference is I have a file in %APPDATA%\Subversion\auth\svn.simple that I did not have when the folders were created again.

Again, I submitted the crash report in case it might have been of use.

The crashing is still occurring after the recent update. I can now see my modified files but after cancelling, TortoiseSVN would crash.

Please delete the registry key
HKCU\TortoiseSVN\StatusColumns
and try again.

I'll fix the reason for the crash soon though, but in the mean time,
removing that registry key should get you working again.

Just to clarify for anyone else with the same problem, the exact path is: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TortoiseSVN\StatusColumns

Feel free to export that if you are uncertain but now "Check for Modification" is working again!
