After my computer hung and I hard rebooted it, I found that the question mark icon was displayed for files that are listed in the .gitignore file.  I checked the contents of the file and they look correct, and in fact the ignore feature had been working as expected before this last reboot.  Killing and relaunching explorer.exe didn't seem to make a difference.  Tgitcache.exe wasn't running, but launching it and relaunching explorer didn't make a difference either.  I went into settings and turned off the icon overlay status cache (this killed the tgitcache.exe process), but going back into the settings and re-anabling the cache to what it was (Shell), it went back to displaying question marks for files that should be ignored (re-enabling this didn't start the tgitcache.exe process automatically).

After playing with it I found that setting the icon overlay status cache from Shell to Default seemed to make it work, the ignored files were then displayed with gray minus icon overlays as expected.  While the wrong icons for ignore files is being displayed I can do a "check for modifications" and it thankfully doesn't list the ignored files as ones to commit.  Is this behavior expected by more experienced TortoiseGit users?  I'm rather new to it, but had been using TortoiseSVN for years without running into something this (sometimes icons would stop displaying and I'd just have to restart tsvncache.exe).  Thanks in advance for your input.
