Dumbass TortoiseGit 2.19 installer

I just ran TortoiseGit->Show Log from within Windows Explorer (Windows 10) and it asked me to upgrade to version 2.19. But when I try installing, it reaches the stage of saying Shutting Down Applications and then the installer tells me it can't proceed because TortoiseGit and Windows Explorer are still running and can't be shut down! it then attempts to recover and enters an endless loop where my screen goes blank, then the desktop reappears (but without any icons) then the icons come back, then my screen goes blank again and the sequence just repeats until I re-boot.

If I re-boot and try reinstalling again (from my Downloads folder) the same thing happens :-(

What happens if you elect to install without stopping the programs, then do a restart?  

Stopping Explorer.exe can be flakey depending on the myriad of extensions you may have installed into it.

Thanks Tony. By a restart do you mean re-running the installer or rebooting? I tried rebooting and then double clicking the downloaded installer (i.e. in my downloads folder) but the same thing happens.

You probably know that on Windows, Explorer isn't just the file browser app. Explorer is also what runs the desktop. I hope I'm wrong but I suspect that the TortoiseGit installer is in fact trying to close that instance of Explorer - i.e. it's trying to disable Windows altogether. Could that explain why (when the installer tries to recover) I get massive problems with my Windows desktop?

In fact has the installer changed for version 2.19? I'd previously used versions 2.12 and 2.18 but they both installed fine.

Hi,

we fully rely on Windows Installer. As TortoiseGit is an explorer
extension, it is loaded by explorer.exe. Therefore, it need to be closed
and restarted.

Maybe select not to restart any apps/services in the installer, then
Windows Installer asks you to reboot at the end.

Woohoo! that worked Sven! Weirdly enough I've never needed to do that before, not when installing TortoiseGit or anything. I guess it must be a problem in the Windows installer. Either way, many thanks for the suggestion.
